Fat Mandarin

So, I can't tell if my mandarin is really fat or if spring is in the tank and there was some spawning going on. She was already pretty plump. Plump enough that I felt comfortable getting a male if I were to see one that caught my eye. Well, I finally did find one (his dorsal fin looks broken, I'm a sucker for a rescue). But I just got him yesterday! Was it love at first sight? Would evidence of spawning be so quick? Or has she been beefing up and I just haven't noticed?
