What is this little guy?

So this little guy just appeared today. No idea what it is. Looks like a little slug. Translucent green in colour with a big pink dot. Could a be a new snail with no shell? I will post a pic when I get home. Just a little weird that he just showed up.

CYCLE STALLED?! not going well.

Hello everyone, new to this reef hobby and about 4 weeks ago i bought and setup a fluvial spec V. i added live rock right away during the first week and live sand. Everything has been going how it should be until a week ago, i tested my waters and saw this: AMMONIA 8PPM, NITRITE 5PPM, AND NITRATE ~40PPM.

This is INSANE parameters. Something has gone wrong. I added a live hermit crab last week and ever since then the water has been terrible. The clarity is fine it is just the parameters.

Now before you give me your suggestions, please keep in mind that all my parameters were setup correctly,

salinity is 1.025

ph is 8.2

temp is steady at 81

i am currently at my 5th week of cycling and it should not be taking this long.

Please do not answer me saying that most cycles take 4-6 weeks or more. I know that and i don't need you to repeat and waste your time. This cycle should not be taking more than 3 weeks for a small little 5 galloon tank such as this one. I even did a 50% water change and the ammonia is still 8ppm, nitrite too is at 5ppm.

Please answer the following:

1) what do i do now? 90% water change?

2) Should i add SuperBac or any other live bacteria to my tank while cycling?

3)please give me your best suggestions in order to start this reef tank because at this point i am very annoyed with the cycling process and just would like to start adding livestock as soon as i finish the cycle.

thank you very much for your time and answers!

Growth in my tank

Hi,

I was recently out of town and I returned to my tank with weird growth. It is purple with tons of bubbles on it and in the sand. It's just layered on the sand and is mossy. Any clue what it is? If so shoild I remove it?

macroalgae in my DT, inside netting?

Hi All--

I have a 100g cube DT w/~150 lbs LR and LS, have a 40g sump w/protein skimmer, and a chiller; SG is 1.023. Have pair of ocellaris clowns, 1 melanurus wrasse, and just got a ruby red dragonet.

I want to provide enough copepods for the dragonet (though the LFS I bought it from said it has already been eating frozen cyclops). I had seen mention somewhere of how one could put some type of macroalgae in a nylon or plastic mesh/net bag and float it in the DT so that the copepods would have a very definite place to hang out and reproduce without being completely eaten out of existence in the DT. Plus the macroalgae would also help out in reducing nitrates and phosphates. I don't have room in my sump to use that for the macroalgae. Someone at an LFS had also suggested, instead of the mesh bag, I could attach a small guppy net breeder to the side of my DT and use that for holding the macroalgae.

So my question is, are there certain types of macroalgae that would be happy growing floating in the net bag (i.e., without being in the sand or on the LR) and that wouldn't be a type that would take over my DT. I was hoping perhaps one of the more colorful/ornamental types of macroalgae would be possible?

Thanks for any help with this!!

Home Depot Light

I'm looking around at options for lighting a reef tank and i realized that places like home depot sell light fixtures at a decent price. (not specifically for aquariums of course)

I found one that hold 4 t5 bulbs.

http://www.homedepot.ca/product/4-fe...e-with-/859610

Is it possible to hang this over a tank?

F/S 2 x AI Vega's

Gauging interest, I'm looking at going a different direction. I have 2 Vega's in black, EXT Mounting System for each, and controller. Pm me with offers

Why Helicopters are Better Than Reef Tanks

My helicopter doesn't grow algae if i ignore it for a few weeks

I've have never spent over $100 dollars on a helicopter part, only to bring it home and have it die within a week.

My helicopter does not have a skimmer cup to empty

I've never got a parasite on my helicopter

I've never watched one part of my heli eat another part

and when a heli crashes, it doesn't kill off thousands of dollars of coral and years of growth.

and on top of it all, helicopters are WAY CHEAPER!

I still love my reef tanks and would never get rid of them. but when people complain about time and money spent on helicopters, I tell them to try setting up a reef tank. Makes learning to fly heli's seem easy!!

MP40 issues

Hi, just curious about opinions on mp40's.

I've heard mixed reviews on them. I bought my first one about a week ago.

The impeller shaft was very sloppy from the start, and could not be positioned to eliminate vibration, it would always end up vibrating at one rpm or another. The rubber guage is set at the right spot as well, and out of curiosity I changed it just to see, only made things worse.

So, I shut it off and wrote to Eco tech, yet to hear back, but that was only on Friday night.

But today, I decided to give it one more try. As before at a certain rpm I could get it not bad, but change the speed or wait an hour later it would go out of alignment. Even when it was set, it was noisy. An hour or so after that, I heard a loud noise from the tank, and then the whole wet side started spinning. The whole thing. The impeller had siezed.

I didn't take it apart, just sent another request to Ecotech. And removed the entire set up.

But, after I have read many reviews of vibrations, noise, etc etc. I'm curious what others have to say. Personally I'm thinking of just getting a good Tunze.

Just curious on others experiences with ecotech.

Thanks,

Refuguim Design

I have a 40 gallon long sump less reef tank. I have been trying to do a HOB refuguim (in Aquaclear 70 filter) but it is not doing much. I am trying to add a custom fuge behind the tank (24"x 6"x 8"). The one thing i am really confused about is the design of the baffles inside the fuge. Concern is:

- Do i need to have baffles to prevent bubbles & what is the optimal design (totally confused)? fuge will be fed by a small pump and return will be handled by a separate pump (i know this is a bit risky but i will add a flat switch to shut off intake pump if water exceeds a certain level). Another question; are baffles needed to prevent chaeto pieces from flowing back into the tank?

- Will the return pump kill copepods before entering the tank again?

let me know pls :drool:

thx

Sleeping wrasse

Does anybody know if a wrasse can sleep 2 days in a row in the sand, i mean my melanus wrasse is new, previously owned, 4" long, thick and in my display refugium with my frogfish whos about the same size.

Ya i know what is she doing there. Well long story short she's there to get rid of the flat worm infestation while i gave 5 huge silverside to my frogfish who is not the size of a blimp. He was that big when the wrasse was there and swimming. I know they sleep in the sand but 2 days.

I have a hard time to beleive that Grouper , my frogfish could even swallow her after 5 silverside the size of sardines. He would of blown up! And i've check all around the floor, no trace outside the box. So its was suggested to me she was sleeping after a huge flatworm meal ....What do you think??

Mini carpet compatibility

Hello,

Yesterday I visited the pet shop as usual and instantly fell in love with this mini carpet anemone, which is now settling in my tank. It is placed away from the corals and bubble tip anemone and seems to be content with where it is.

It looks like it's in two halves, but it isn't. The rock is actually in two pieces and the anemone is attached to both.

I've always wanted to keep sexy shrimp or a porcelain crab in the tank but the clownfish would probably kick them out of the BTA. Would a mini carpet be alright with sexy shrimp or porcelain crabs taking up residence on it (I'm aware they may well choose to live somewhere else)?

I've done my homework on these anemones but any general tips you guys can provide me with would be wonderful. Thanks for your time!

Sunny Sunday

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is ready. Spinach quiche, hash browns, mystery breakfast meat, and hot fruit compote (with nanners, of course). I bet Perry has some bread to offer ;)

Jeff  Scares like that are, well, scary! It's good that you were there to get right on to call the LP company.

Dick- Funny how retirement is...you'll know when it's the right time ;)

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Will a t8 bulb be good for macroalgae or cheato?

So I am pretty sure I am going to put some cheato or macroalgae back into my sump again. I have one natural daylight t8 light that I have laying around and I was wondering if it would be sufficient for cheato and macroalgae? The fixture says 20 watts. My sump is only 30 gallons so its not to tall, but I am still not sure if its strong enough.

PhosBan Reactor VS. Carbon reactor

What is the difference between a PhosBan Reactor and a carbon reactor?

How long will it last?

Hey TRT I have a sailfin tang in my 60 gallon tank. I have to look after it for my friend who got out of the hobby. The tanks dimensions are 3x 20 x 20

The 20 is inches and the 3 is feet, so how long will it last in there?

What the actual... Please help me identify this thing (shudder)...

Hey all,

Found this really scary thing in my sand bed. Can anyone identify?

It looks like a worm of some sort. The main body (left) was under the sand. The tentacles on the right are the things I see above the sand moving around looking for food. The red thing on the right is a blood worm from tonights feeding.

ewwie ewwie ewwie.. Please tell me this is a harmless thing. Or do I need to sift my sand bed and get every single one out. I bet there are like 10 clusters of these tentacles.

Wrasse acted like wanted to eat but didnt

My six line wrasse who I have had since June 2014 has been living with a bicolor, a clown fish, and a very very small damsel in a 40g, no problems best friends. First week of Nov added a valentini puffer who seemed to do his own thing never messed with anyone and they ignored him. When feeding came same foods been feeding with no problems since june, some flakes some frozen. All of a sudden in last week and a half wrasse began to get skinny but was just as active came out with everyone when feeding time, but I noticed he would only take a few little pieces and would take chunks into his rock which he never did before. Yesterday he stayed up in rock but would move around to see me, today found him dead on sand bottom. Only difference in last 2 months was new fish and I did a water change with natural ocean water twice. ANY IDEAS?, I could see he wanted to eat, he was just as eager as rest, without the being skinny there was no change to behavior, nothing visible on him

Feeding fish

Hi,

I have a tank and am looking into some other fish. For the clown fish I only feed them pellets. I am looking at Chromis's and Basslet's and was wondering if they will just eat the same pellets or if I need to feed them different food?

How Deep of a Sand Bed?

Ok, I am very confused on how deep of a sand bed I should get. I have heard of bare bottom tanks, but the natural look of a sand bed is just too appealing. I would like to be getting a Tiger Watchman Goby, which requires a deepish sand bed, and I would also like some cerith snails. I have also heard that if you have too deep a sand bed, that the bacteria underneath after a period of time will get no oxygen, and DIE! Is this true, and if it is how deep of a sand bed should I get that supports both the needs of my goby, snails, and bacteria?:fish::fish::fish:

High Nitrate and purple sand

What kind of blenny is this?

I think I read online that it's an eyelash blenny. I've never seen anything like it and the LFS I bought it from doesn't have any others like it,I was wondering If it is a female or ..? Thanks ! Picture below.

December Meeting

Hey Team,

Sorry for the delay on getting this thread up. Lets aim for Thursday December 11th at 6 p.m. at the rochester ALC. This will also be a TCMAS "sanctioned" meeting. So, it will be an opportunity for everyone to get your free membership to there forum.

The classroom currently only has a 125g reef. There are also a couple cichlid tanks set up, and I am in the process of building a shelving unit for additional tanks.

Look forward to seeing everyone!

STAR WARS Episode VII Trailer

2 Week Cycle???

Hey all,

I started up a 60g tank 14 days ago. I added some live rock from another tank as well as some dry rock. I also used 10lbs of live sand along with some dry sand. I'm doing a fishless cycle. Well, I added a piece of a dead fish to kick start the process.

I didn't test any of the levels except for ph and salinity/SG for the first week. Two days ago I tested a few parameters...

nitrite 0, nitrate, 0, ammonia less than 25ppm

ph 7.9, Ca 380ppm, Mg 1000ppm, SG 1.024, dkh 11.8

At about 1 week from the first day I noticed tiny aiptasia sprouting. At about day 11 I had quite a few of these and the bigger ones were nearly 3/8" tall. One has even started growing in the sand. Today, there are at least 30 of these growing. I also noticed tiny, bright green bulbs sprouting on the freshest piece of rock.

Among the living, There are quite a few dead worm looking things attached to one of the rocks. They don't seem to be decomposing.

Just yesterday, day 13, a brownish gold algae blew up my tank. One of my rocks with purple coralline is about half covered with this light brownish algae. The algae is also growing on parts of the sand.

**Today my tests for ammonia are not zero, but less than 25ppm, nitrates are 0, and my nitrates are 20ppm. I am using RO/DI water only. No livestock.

The last 48 hours I ran with no filter nor skimmer because ammonia was not showing up. I thought the filtering system might be preventing the tank from cycling.

My question is: Could my tank have already cycled? Could I have missed the ammonia to nitrite cycle completely?

thanks

New bigger tank

I am looking for a new tank but my biggest thing is keeping it 4ft so i can use my t5 light system. Can anyone point me to some sites that sell tanks? I need to order online cause we dont have much for choices in the small town i live in.

I found this for black friday special but was confused by dimensions.

http://www.petsmart.com/featured-sho...m%3D150+gallon

Idk how that 150 gallon can only be 2 ft long... R those dimensions right?

Nerite snails

One of the nerites I got is much bigger than the rest, size of a quarter. He doesn't seem to be doing much. I read that they will hang out above the water line while for a week or so, but He hasn't come down like the smaller ones.

I knocked him off once and put him by the diatoms and he ate for a while but next morning he was back on the ceiling. I think I would've caught him if he was moving to eat and then returning to his spot. It seems like he would need to eat the most, but maybe he's retired?

Water checks out and everyone else seems fine

Siphon Technique

I have had my tank going for a year and I dont think I am siphoning correctly. I recently bought the Aqueon 25' siphon thing that you hook to the sink to create the siphon. Its much easier than siphoning into a garbage can. I know the siphon is strong because I actually siphoned out too much water last night without knowing it. But while I was siphoning the sand I noticed that the detritius was moving around in the siphon tube but then falling out the bottom and back into the sand. When I siphon I put the tip into the sand bed and let the sand tumble around. I thought this would allow the detritius to be sucked out when it became separated from the sand. Some of the detritius may be sucked out but not all of it.

So am I doing something wrong or is the diameter of the siphon tube not big enough (it does suck sand up through the tube).

Maybe overstocking???

Just joined this forum, and I'm exited, but I've been worried that my bio load might be too much if i get these fish... they are

  • Bristletooth Tomini Tang

  • One Spot Foxface Rabbitfish

  • Midas Blenny

  • Tiger Watchman Goby

(I have put a blenny and a goby in the same tank, have mercy on my soul)

  • 3 Firefish ( The ones with a tall fin on their heads)

Thats about it, my tank is a 75 gallon with an ASM G2 Protein Skimmer. I can't wait to see what you have to say.:rotflmao::fish::fish::fish::rotflmao:

Hey guys!

Hey guys, i am so exited to be in this club ! I can't wait to ask some questions!;)

frozen food amounts?

I have a 90 gallon with 2 clowns, a one spot fox face, a coral beauty, and a molly miller blenny. I feed frozen mysis, frozen brine, pellets, and nori. I'v noticed the cubes of miss and brine seem to have way too much in them when I thaw them out.

Do you all cut up the cubes when feeding? Do you thaw the cubes in salt water first?

First tank, Please help.

So, I had two planted fresh water tanks. One 90 gal and a 36 gal corner tank. Both were very nice but my wife wanted to convert to 36 gal corner tank into saltwater. I have never done salt water before.

We got a bunch of stuff from a guy locally for really cheap. fluvial canister filter, 5/6 good size pieces live rock, power head, thermometer, salt, crushed coral and some other odds and ends.

So I cleaned out the tank and went for the set up. I added Caribbean sea live substrate. I have been cycling the tank 6-7 days now but am wondering how to incorporate the protein skimmer in which I do not have yet. No fish though so I have some time. I have been seeing a lot about sumps and am somewhat familiar with them from friends that have had tanks. How do I calculate the size I need for a 36 Gal corner tank. The space underneath is only 11X17X26 (W/D/H). I dont know where to start. 10 Gal tank glass panels silicone them in place and ?

Is the canister filter enough or should I go the sump route. I would like to start sooner then later. Please help.

How's this algae look?

So I just wanted everyone's opinion on the algae I've got going on here. Tank is 3 months old, phosphates test 0 every time and I feed every other day. Two clowns and a Kole tang right now. I've attached pics of what I got going on. The one rock full of coralline was a seed rock from my LFS. I've got coralline showing up on other rocks, glass, powerheads and my overflow. Also a note, I turned the lights on after three days of vacation to feed so that is why all my zoas are closed up.

I don't fully understand dosing?

So to my understanding, dosing b-ionic is to maintain levels and not raise them? I dose 15 ca and 8 alk and my levels always fluctuate. I try to keep my calcium at 450 but it's always at 410 because my saltwater is at 420 and then my animals are using whatever's left. Alk is stable but calcium is the issue. No matter what dosage I use calcium is always at 410 or less. I've heard that you just dose the same and then add turbo calcium to raise it and then maybe adjust your levels a bit to compensate? Is that what I should do? Just keep dosing and when I get to 450 raise my dosage to say 20 of ca? Someone explain in detail, thanks

What LED light?

I'm thinking of having my wife get me LEDs for Christmas for my tank. I don't really know what the difference in the whites and blues combo and the full spectrum lights. Can anyone help me on this? It will be going on my 30 gallon tank. LPS dominate. Any suggestions on certain ones are welcome, and any info is appreciated. Thanks

Help with coral

What coral can I get that does not require a lot of lighting and is easy to care for.

WTB corals: live in Oregon

So I am wanting to buy some more corals for my 120 gallon mixed reef, and I am hoping maybe one of you fellow reefers could hook me up with some frags or something? I am looking for a little bit cheaper then my LFS since I am a little low on cash to spend on my reef. I have been keeping saltwater for 2 years and its been a reef since the beginning. Right now I have pom pom xenias, 3 different species of shrooms, zoas, a frogspawn, a hydnophora, 2 pink bubble tip nems, and one green bubble tip nem. Things are just a bit empty with so little corals. I currently have metal halides, but very soon will be switching to some eBay full spectrum LED lighting. They're pretty much the same as reefbreeders. I am not picky, but am definitely more comfortable with softies and lps. I definitely want to get some sps here soon, but I am still hesitant as I am not 100% sure I am experienced enough for them. If its an easier species of sps I am definitely willing to try it though. I live in Springfield, Oregon. Let me know what you have and maybe we can work something out :) Thanks.

Help! Sick Wrasse

I have a male and a female McCosker's in QT for several weeks now. A few weeks ago I noticed a small white patch on the female's tail. About 1 week ago I noticed white patches around her head and the male had one white patch on the top of his head.

The male acts normal and it doesn't seem to affect him. The female has become increasingly lethargic and today she's lying in a corner.

About a week ago I tried 2 days worth of erythromycin with no effect, so I switched to Furan 2. This is the fourth day on Furan and the patches have diminshed. The female still has 1 cloudy eye where the patches are and she is very lethargic. Does anyone know what this is that I'm dealing with? Secondly what should I be treating it with?

New member, new to salt tanks and looking for feedback

I have been checking in here for 6 weeks but decided to join so hi to everyone. I have had large freshwater african cichlid tanks for ten years but with the recent move I left my tank for the previous homebuyer upon request of sale. This gave me the opportunity to embark on salt water for the first time. Below is what i have done and i want the experts to point out flaws or issues. Here is how it went and what i am encountering.

125 gallon (72 inch long) with dual offcenter overflows. I have a refugium that has the sock with 1 inch pvc pipes about 8 inches long pushed up into the water intake end to quiet the water splashing in the sock that works well. The firt part has the sock and live rock as much as i can fit with chaeta (spelling) algae. I also have a light on this part of the refugium that is on at night. The second compartment has the skimmer rated for 180 i believe as many of you believe this is the most important part. I also have as much live rock i could bye from reef tanks in there as well along with carbon and phosphate remivers. The second compartmemt are two rio 2500 return pumps but they are dialed back a little because one side of my overflow flushes. I tried everything and this is all the works. I also have a uv sterilizer thst pulls water from sump and dumps it back into the last compartment where the return pumps. The main tank has as much corraline algae covered rocks i could afford. Lets say 40 lbs and then a lot of what i guess is called base rock creating caves and shelves. I used 6 bags of live sand and had local fish store come and fill it with ro salt water. I have two hydro 1150 power heads in each corner and i am assuming standard lights as they have a white, blue, and lcd night time switches. I used stability for one month 6 caps a day and have been using prime 3 caps a day since i started the tank. I basically have left the lights off for the most part of the last five weeks. I didnt get a diatom bloom but i surely could of as obe day i had the tank on for an hour and algae started to grow quick but it brushed off so perhaps leaving the lights off helped me. I had amnonia week two but never over .5 and week 3-4 it went to zero. Didnt have nitates yet but then saw nitrites a little and then had both nitrites and nitrates in week 4. These have come down and when fish was added the amnonia and nitrite was zero and nitrate was small. At the end of the week i got 5 snails and five hermits. Assuming going to need a lot more. This is a fish only tank and currently has a lemon butterfly and foxface that i added a couple days ago. The clean up crew wiped any rock that started to get color back to white and the rocks with coralline seem to be spreading as the places that are touching are really puple which i find hard to believe as my lights have been out. Now bad news is that one snail was killed by a hermit and my lemon butterfly has ick. I used herbtana and had to shut my skimmer down as it went nuts. I am not sure how worried i should be with marine ich as i have never had issues getting rid of it in freshwater tanks and i am focusing on their diet and water conditions. I did get a small amount of nitrite reading today but it is hard for me to tell with how close the colors are to be honest. Also the fish store runs there water at 1.23 and i have raised it to 1.25 once i got my ro unit. My phosphates barely read and ph was 8.1 i would say so i am using a buffer to bring it to 8.3 but it is still lower then what i want. I was getting ready to add fish after these 5 and a half weeks but now with ick i guess i dont know i can.

Sorry for long post and who ever i put to sleep but any thing to pick apart please let me know. Perhaps the cycle was not done when i thought it was.

Thanks

Stocking for a 75 gallon aquarium

Hey guys, I've been on this forum a lot looking a advice and all kinds of knowledge. I was just curious about my current stocking situation.

I have a 75 gallon tank, with probably 70-80 lbs of life rock. ( plan on getting more just money is tight right now). Current stock is 3 yellow tail damsels, a baby yellow tank, a foxface, a 6 line wrasse, 2 ocellaris clown fish, a mandarain goby, and a dragon goby. I have several different mushroom and zoanthid corals in there as well as a galaxia.

Current filter setup is a shitty protein skimmer I plan on upgrading, a HOB penguin 350 with chaeto algae and more live rock in it for the copopods to cultivate in.

I have 2 (forget the brand) 950gph cirulation pumps as well.

Just wondering if anybody had any tips to keep it running smoothly. All my levels are in check as well.

Green Star Polyp and nano Tank

So I was thinking of glueing a piece of my GSP coral frag onto the back wall of my biocube. I know I have seen people do it and I really like how it looks. I was wondering if anyone knows of any drawbacks or anything of doing it? I have the small frag in the tank now and just cant decide if I want to glue it to the back wall or not.

I dont want to do it and regret it later. I know it grows pretty fast and spread out.

Hello from Chicago. Green eggs and Ham, help!

Hello!

My name is Taylor and I'm a fairly seasoned freshwater aquarist. I just got into saltwater about 6 months ago and everything has been going very well, expensive, but well.

3d print custom ABS doohickeys

I've been learning Google sketchup to plan my overflow, and I know some people use it for 3d printing. The trick is the printers are super expensive, but some UPS stores are offering the service now.

So you could draw whatever snail trap, tubing clip, diverter, or eductor your little heart desires, bound only by the laws of physics; bring it to the shop on a flash drive and pick it up the next day...

Idk is ABS plastic reef safe? Idk how much it costs.

Zoanthids open but dying

Hi guys. I got a 2 month old 20 gallon reef with hundreds of green zoas. I use 2x T5 HO bulbs, zeros across the board (nitrate, nitrite ammonia etc). 1.026 SG. I havent dosed the tank with supplements yet and I think that is what the problem is.

I can't post pics right now cause my cell phone wont let me here. but they look exactly like this:

Sorry for that huge link but its the best pic I can find. They are turning into puffy white umbrellas and some do not close in the dark or when touched I have heard a variety of answers; too much light, too little light, etc. I tried moving the zoas around but it doesn't do anything. I am going to go to the LFS and see what they say. I think I need iodine or magnesium.

Any answers are appreciated.

Filter socks and protein skimmers

I am sure this has been covered and I did try doing a search for the answer on this forum, but I didn't see it within the first couple of pages and I am too lazy to keep reading. So, I have a 50 gal DT and a 16 gal sump, running for 5 weeks. I just installed a bubble magus nac3.5 skimmer. I had some problems setting it up, for like two days. It kept wanting to over flow so I added a control valve to the air intake and it seemed to help. I still had some large bubbles at the top of it, but not pulling a lot of skim-mate. I pulled out my filter sock to clean it and the bubbles calmed way down. No more large bubbles, just small ones. Now that I have eliminated my problem, is there an alternative to using a filter sock? Could I put a carbon filter sponge in the overflow of the DT to catch all the big detritus and eliminate the filter sock?

Secondary Names

I am curious. On all of our posts, under our id is another name such as "Plankton", "Sea Stang", "Mermaid in Disguise" and others. Where does this come from? Can it be changed?

Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity.

75 Gal Showpiece Fish

I am starting up a 75 Gal SW reef tank.

I was thinking about stocking and I have wanted a tang, but from what I read a 75 gal is probably a bit too small and will have to wait until an upgrade before I get a tang.

With that being said, what would be a good show piece fish for a 75 gal reef tank?

I'm a dunce

I'm out of town, and figured I'd take advantage of the Black Friday sales. What I didn't think about is that I get back Sunday... The website I ordered from ships priority overnight. We have someone staying at the house, so they can bring the package in, but I don't want to make them have to do te whole acclimation process, especially since they've never done it before. I've thought about having them put all the corals into a bucket and drip acclimate everything for the 24 hours before I get back. What do you think the best course of action will be if the package arrives?

I also tried calling the company, but all I got was the answering machine.

Lol I feel like such an idiot.

Whats your earliest aquarium memory?

Mine is from 1972.

After killing some gold fish I had won at the fair tossing a ping pong ball my mom bought me a five gallon tank for my birthday.

That was in the days from before chlorimines so the pet store guy told us to fill it with tap water and wait a few days until the chlorine gassed off and toss in some guppy's which is what we did.

Evidently guppy's are pretty resilient when it come to ammonia and they all lived and within a few months there were twice as many guppy's. Then came a sword tail which promptly jumped out of the tank and then some platys and yada yada yada.

I also remember the heater on this tank was spectacular at causing AM radio static. Just when Kasey Kassem was about to play the latest Osmand brothers song the heater would try to kick in and I would get terrible static. Man that made me mad.

Black FRIDAY Morning!

Good Morning, Everyone! :)

Black Friday is a phenomenon where shoppers go crazy and the wise stay away. I choose to be 'wise' and not go anywhere near a shopping mall or big box store. It's safer that way. ;) For any of you who go into the fray, happy shopping!

Cold morning but 43f and sunshine for the afternoon.

Just coffee and maybe a biscuit for breakfast as I'm still full from yesterday. :D

I had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving dinner with 2/3rds of my children present at the family gathering. Daughter Mary Elizabeth was unable to come in from Nashville as she only had Thanksgiving day off from work. :(

Bucky is fleeing the scene and on his way to a sports bar as Mrs. Doe just took his credit card and headed to the mall.

Have a Fabulous Friday!

Black Friday Weekend Sale on our CR108P LED Light

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we’re having a sale on our already bargain priced CR108P Compact Full Spectrum LED light. Save $20 from the regular price of $269, for a $249 extra bargain, with free shipping!

Check out our CR108P, pictured on the left, next to a popular pendant LED light. Both lights are hanging over a livestock tank in an LFS. LED colors are hard to capture accurately in pictures, but per the store owner, the pendant illuminated side looks green and kind of dingy in comparison to the full spectrum CR108P.

You can find more info on the CR108P light and available accessories on our Webstore

Banded Cat Shark owner

My previous experience is a 150 gal tank with blue tangs, box fish, hawkfish, and chromis and clown fish. I also for 2 years raised and bred seahorse with 5 mating pairs in a combined 900 gal system...lots of work. I sold those system to have time to return to school. Now I have time and a new system.

I am now raising a banded cat shark, I hatched my banded shark a couple of weeks ago. I have a 280 gal tank I built and 100 gal two chamber sump with mechanical filter and huge skimmer for 600 gal system. All works well and my shark has been eating since day 1, and already eating from my hand comfortably. In the tank also are 2 blue chromis and 3 blue green chromis, 1 Coral Beauty, 1 sail tang and 1 clown fish. All seem to be doing well.

Now I am looking to put a few other living tank mates in with my shark. I was thinking of maybe a few brittle stars or sand stars to help with the bottom cleaning. I know that these sharks are bottom dwellers but I have heard and read that as long as they are kept fed that they do not really pose a problem to others on the bottom.

What other cleaners could be used in the tank with the banded shark to help clean up after him?

Thanks

David

Aaah! My nem!!

Hey TRT, I woke up this morning to see my new 60 gallon tank cloudy and objects floating in it. (AAAH!) MY NEM!!! It was attached to the power head and

Was ripped up in shreds, I have no idea why this happened but I got strait to work, siphoning out all the anemone parts and then I did a 15 gallon water change and tested my parems and they were all perfect (but my phosphate was a little high, I'm getting a reactor soon) so I replaced my nem for the clownfish.

So what I'm wondering WHY this happened. WHAT I can do to prevent this happening again. And WHEN I can add more corals.

By the way my parems are perfect now I did another 20 gallon water change too.

Calcium 440. PH. 8.3 phosphate 0.08 ammonia 0 nitrite.

Soo maaany leeeggs!!

Bristle worm is the only thing I ever heard of, it doesn't look like the pics in Google cause they have more red. I tried to search but it was awful and I had to go take 4 showers.

It's like 1 1/2 inches long moves slower than you would think. Was in the chaeto, on the surface of the sand (not buried). Will it hurt my snails?

using alagefix

I put alage fix in my tank about 15 min ago then noticed one of my live rocks had fallen. I read on the back it's hazardous to absorb it in ur skin (of course swallowing it or in eyes) also read could cause cancer. Is it safe to put my hand in the water to fix my rock

Dumb question

What does it mean "phosphates are limiting"

I keep reading it in the sand threads as an explanation, but I havent gotten to the one that explains what that is.

Thanks

the next step

Hello everyone. Im Ryan and currently running a 55gal reef in Clovis NM. Im joining up to get some information and help where I can. I recently purchased a 215gal from a gentleman in Lubbock. I will be on here a lot looking for some help with the build and advice for a proper reef tank.

Cheers

Personality Filled fish for 55 gallon

Currently I have a standard 55 gallon that has been fully cycled for about 2 months now. The only things in the tank currently is live rock, one striped damsel, a goby that blends way too much into his surroundings, and 2 small snails. Eventually we want to add a few easy corals but nothing over the top. Reefing is new to us and we're taking it slow. But because we want to add a few the choices have to be reef safe.

If you haven't been able to tell by my username and avatar pic, we're a fun loving family that loves to laugh. We enjoy things that are full of personality and color! With this in mind, what do you think are the most fun fish to watch that will fit in a 55 gallon? We don't want fish that hide all day long and we need some color.

Coral Beauty Scatching, Ich?

Hi guys, I have yet another problem with my coral beauty. Recently he got a case of HLLE and is slowly recovering but now he seems to srart scratching 2-3 times a day that I've seen him. I've read that it could be ich but I don't see any white dots on him yet. If it is ich should I move him into another tank for copper treatment? Or is there another way to treat him?

Replacement Skimmer Pump

I currently have a SCA-302 Protein Skimmer that uses a ATMAN 2000 as a pump. The pump is not running as efficiently as it should be and I believe its due to the fact the impeller has become defective. I know I can probably get another impeller and solve the issue for a few months but before I do that I want to check with you all and see if you know a replacement pump I can get instead? Any suggestions?

Link ia star success.... Finally

I've done what many have said to be impossible and finally decided to get a linkia star for my tank. After a trip to a reef wholesaler (where I bought about a 1000$ worth of coral for 300$) I picked up what I believed to be a very healthy and wholesome looking starfish and made sure not to expose to air and bagged him myself. At home he was carefully drip acclimated for 2 hours and then real eased into the tank. it's now been a week and he still is very active and has no signs of sickness or arm breakdown. Pics to come when i get wifi

Pump time

Hi,

Does this look ok to overflow a 55g ~4feet above the sump?

http://ift.tt/1ppjz4H

The head loss calculator I found required entering a model # but didn't have this one, also this company rates by liters. I had to go back and forth a couple times, so I thought I should run it by you guys. There's a jebao in the same range but I like how this one is adjustable on the pump, I'm not married to it though if there's something better.

I got a couple rec's for the mag 12 in the equipment forum, thoughts?

Thanks!

Question about Marineland 27 Gallon Cube

Hi,

Can you get the Marineland 27 Gallon Cube without the stand? Some online listings make it hard to tell if it includes it or not. Anyone have this setup? Do you like it for reefing? Obviously the lighting would need to be replaced.

Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Morning all! Happy Thanksgiving to all and your families! Since there's going to be lots of food everywhere I put out coffee and Cheese and Raisin Babka. We only got a couple of very wet heavy snow,so all cleared up.have to finish getting ready for family.have a safe and happy holiday.

How NOT to catch a damsel....

1st try: just the net

2nd try: Fish trap.

3rd try: leave net in tank (right next to fish trap) for a few days, think damsel will become used to net... Fish trap = hahahahahaha

4th try: damsel is smarter than the net. Human puts food in net thinking damsel will fall for it. damsel still wary after day 4. DAY 4!!!!!

5th try: Put pane of glass between rock and side of tank so when damsel enters the "catch" area, there is no escape.... Damsel has still not entered the 'catch' area after day 2.

My sweet sweet clowns and coral beauty shouldn't have to deal with this.

tomorrow i might give thanks by removing my entire aquascape and finally ridding my tank of damsels. Never to introduce them again.

For the record, every fish has entered the food/net/trap... except the M F Damsel. dear lord. why...

How high to hang my metal halides?

I had a 6x39 t5 fixture that I'm switching to 2x250w. Using 2 icecap ballast with 2 20k DE hamilton bulbs. Where should I start to hang and how should I adjust so I can eventually get to 6-10". Seems like overkill for a 40B but I plan on having clams and lots of sps. As well as some Lps at the bottom. The way I'll hang is that I'll screw in a 2x4 facing vertically into the top frame of my stand. And then a horizontal 2x4 that faces out over my tank. Then have picture hanging wire hanging from those so my light is adjustable.

First tank problems

Hello all,

I'd like to start of by thanking anyone who is able to give us some good advice on solving our problem. I have wanted a fish tank for years and my fiance and I recently got involved in trying to get our set up going.

We were recently gifted a 40 gallon tank and stand. It was previously used for a planted freshwater aquarium. Previous owners let the tank go and it eventually sat in a garage for about a year.

After acquiring the tank, it had some residue and build-up on the sides which needed to be scrubbed off. I spent a few hours with a scrub pad and graduated to cleaner to help get it clean. We let the tank sit for a day and visited our local marine fish store to get advice on how to go further. The gentleman at the store was very knowledgeable and excellent in getting us started. So about 30 hours after I had used the cleaner we began the set up process.

We purchased, bio-sand (Fiji pink live sand), pre-made salt water, cured live rock and an aquatop cf400 uv canister filter. We put the sand in, then the water, then the live rock. Turned the filter on, followed all the instructions that came with the filter (rinsing off the carbon and bio agents ect.) and got it running. Then we let the tank sit for 48 hours. We went back to the store, had our water tested and everything tested out great. We purchased 3 baby Picasso clown fish. Took them home, followed instructions on floating them in the water in order to acclimate them and then added them into the tank. The following day they died about mid day. We came home tonight, took those back to the store, had the water tested again... Looked all fine.. Again... He kindly credited us the clown fish and gave us 2 blennies (I believe is what they were called).

He told us they were a bit stronger in new environments and would be good to start building the environment and test to see if they lasted. We again floated them in the water 30 minutes to let them get acclimated to the temperature and the tank then released them. They went up to the top where there was a slight cloudy residue (which the gentleman at the store assured us was normal for an initial setup); they appeared to be eating off of the top. The clowns immediately stayed near the bottom of the tank but did eventually venture out to the rest of the tank and the top so we took this to be a good sign. We kept an eye on them considering what happened with the first fish. Within about five minutes the first fish sank down to the bottom and appeared to be gasping. A minute or two later, the other fish did the same thing and about three minutes later, they both perished.

We would like to know if anyone has any advice for us on this matter. The gentleman at the store mentioned that we could completely drain the water, rinse everything, and it could be fine as a worst case scenario. Considering that the water tested normal, he is going to run better tests for it in a few days, after the holiday, but we would like to know if there is anything that we could do in the interim.

Has anyone ever heard about this happening before? We are open to any advice that anyone may give. We would love some advice on how you may start over and any pointers that you may give us.

We are very excited about starting our first tank and would like to be successful. At this point, we are wondering if we are going to need to completely scrap our investment and start over...maybe in a few months when we have the resources to do so...again...

Mandarin Dragonet won't eat

I've had this guy for about 8 months now and he's just freaking me out now. He won't eat. I've tried pellets, mysis shrimp, and pods. I've supplemented pods from the start of his entry as well. He looks super skinny in everything but his head. What can I try? ?

Carpet Anemone Worries

Chromis...

hey TRT, for the 60/70 gallon im wondering if i could fit in a small school of chromis in it? I also have a pair of true percs, and a bengal cardinal.

the fish i was planning to add were maybe a foxface, a small group of neon gobies, and a flame angel?

please tell me if i am too ambitious because sometimes i am...

but please no abuse on this thread.

give me a buzz if you want to tell me your opinion.

Changing Salt

I have been using IO since I started my tank. Now that I have corals I bought IO Reef Crystals. Is it OK to just change salt at a water change? Or should I mix the IO and the Reef Crystals slowly over a few water changes?

Need help creating checklist for Reef tank

Hi everyone, first time posting on here, have read some of the threads here and there.

I'm looking to get my first saltwater aquarium and need some help determining exactly what I need.

In this thread, titled Coralife Biocube on here (not enough posts to post links yet apparently, there's a lot of talk about whether you need UV sterilizers or protein skimmers, etc so I was hoping to get a thread going with what it is I'm looking to set up and what I will need for it.

First off, I'm starting with Coralife BioCube 29 gallon tank. I'm planning to use live sand and live rock as natural filtration (of course with an actual filter). I'd like to have 2 clowns and either 2 black and white damsels or 1 hippo tang (not sure the BC 29 is big enough for 2 clown and the tang).

My main concern is making sure I have all theright, necessary equipment. So far what I've seen I need to get is:

- A heater (any suggestions or the average heater is good?)

- For pumps I'm looking at the 750gph Koralia Evolution Circulation Pump (I've seen several posts here and elsewhere discussing whether or not to use multiple circulation pumps, what's the general thoughts on this?)

- BioCube Protein Skimmer

- BioCube UV sterilizer

- Miscellaneous tools (master reef testing kit, hydrometer, etc)

- Also looking for some thoughts on necessity of spectrometers.

Thanks everyone!

Need Help! White rash on my Ocellaris.

My ocellaris has a white rash I wish to treat accordingly. Can anyone help? Cant figure out what it is.

Micro bubbles

Does anyone have a problem with micro bubbles when using the cadlights pls50 skimmer? I can't seem to get rid of them. I have been running the skimmer for about a month now and it works great, I have no complaints about it skimming ability, but I have micro bubbles in my tank like crazy. The tank I have is the innovative marine 40g with a max spect 120w razor. Let me know if you have a suggestions on how to fix this problem. I have the skimmer right now in the second baffle. It is really the only good skimmer that fits in the system too.

Sebae anemone

I have a small sebae anemone that has brown strings wrapping up a few tentacles. It looks like a piece of thread and like it is cutting the circulation to the tentacle off. Anyone had something like this happen? The nem is new so I don't want to stress it trying to get it off if I don't have to.

Powerhead thingee that moves around sort of

I'm gonna order my sand, so might as well look at powerheads too. Isn't there a power head thingee that like changes what it is doing with settings so sometime it is blowing hard and sometimes soft and maybe even move around or for different directions and how do you control that can I use my iPhone. I want that what is it?

Magnesium problem

I've been dosing calcium and alk with the b-pink and my calcium has been low this whole time. Alk is around 10.5 and calcium is always 400 or below. My alk is where I want it but the calcium is too low for me. So I tested mag and whaddya know, it's 1180. Can someone suggest ways of raising it and the max ppm's raised daily? I've heard of the Epsom salt but does sulfate really affect a reef that badly? Thanks

What coral should I get?

I have a green star polyp which I have had for 4 months now. It's very easy to maintain. I'm thinking of getting my second coral. I want something similar to the green star polyp as easy to maintain. What should I get?

Going for corals in the mean time

So with the recent deaths in my tank due to ich, I am going coral only in my DT for a few months to kill the ich whilst I set up my fish qt and my coral qt. I'm going to qt everything now before it hits the DT so I need to set these up first.

I have a 10 gallon for the corals and am going to get a 37 or 55 for my fish qt depending on tomorrow's sales. I currently have a marine orbit led which has been fine for softies but I want to do lps and more softies and eventually sps but am scared of those.

I plan on getting a reef radiance nano for my 10g and am looking at either two reef radiance 165dm+ or the reef breeders photon 48. I feel these lights will suffice for whatever I want and I'll use the marine on my fish qt. I know some say the marine is fine for softies and lps but I just don't like the look of them so I will upgrade.

I plan on seeding the 10g with rock from my DT since there will be no fish in there and any ich on the rock will die. I'm going to start the fish qt from scratch. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanks and happy thanksgiving all.

Help with what coral to get

I have a green star poly and I'm thinking about adding another coral. The green star polyp seems like a very easy coral to take care of. I have had it for 4 months now. What other coral can I get in the same family that is just as easy to maintain.

Last Fish in 65 gallon tank

I am open for suggestions on one last fish for my reef tank (mostly all softies polyps, with brain and frogspawn)

Right now I have

Blue Damsel

Clown

purple DottyBack

6 line Wrasse

Would I even be ok getting 2 more fish. Tank has been up for over a year. Just wanting to add 1 or 2 more fish then continue adding coral. Just looking for suggestions from the group

Water changes in the office?

So i got to thinking that i would like to move my Fluval Edge 6 gallon after my baby frys grow up. Some questions or concerns I have... I work for a computer company. They are fine with us having a tank if it is completely closed like the fluval edge is.

First thing is water changes. With it being only 6 gallons how should i do water changes? I am planning on doing a peco reef with maybe just inverts in it. A bathroom is very close so thats the upside. I really dont wanna bring a bucket and siphon to work tho...

Any suggestions would be great. Currently i run the tank Bare bottom and maybe i should stick with that and do some rock for filtration and areas to put my reefs on?

Ill get a timer and power strip and run a set of led lights off of it.

What else do you prefer i change? or suggestions?

Anything would be great. Thanks!

Wednesday countdown to TDay

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is ready. Scrambled eggs and cheese, cooked soft since they are farm fresh eggs. Sour dough toast, apple butter, nanners....that should get us started.

PV - Glad you got your fridge repaired. It's nice to hear that the repair person owned up to his error.

Jeff - OUCH on your credit card breach! Good that it was caught so quickly.

Rain, rain, rain today. Tonight I'll start making some of the stuff I'll take to Thanksgiving dinner. I might make shoo-fly pie tonight.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone.

Alk for a mixed reef

Hey guys, just wanted some opinions on where my alk should be for a mixed reef. The tank is lps heavy, only one softie (mushroom), 2 sps (acro & monti) and a few zoa. The rest is all lps, all of which are looking great but was wondering what my ideal alk should be as this is the first time i've kept sps. Right about its at about 7.5dhk from my last test, i did add some Reef Foundation B so i haven't retested yet, calcium is at 443ppm. Thoughts on alk level?

Thanks (if you want to see pics, check out my sig)

Reef forums

Alright since I apparently cause so many problems on this forum what's another decent one? I mean personally I think I've done my job well here. Turned you guys into world class google search detectives, got told I wasn't mature by administrators, later messaged by an admin guy, and have started some big battle between noob and some new dude about being fake. All in a good weeks work I suppose. And by the way I think I'm honored that you guys think I'm dedicated enough to troll as two people. I can't say I'm that dedicated but thanks for considering me that good. So yea whatever I guess. I'll leave you saps alone and go bug some other site for a week or so. Any suggestions?

Sand debate?

Ok guys had to make a new thread for this for the apparent war going on in the last thread. I have decided I want to use actual reef sand instead of play sand in my tank but my question is what type of reef sand do you guys use or would recommend? I personally use Carib sea aragonite but am open to other opinions. Thanks

The increasingly popular sand debate

Ok guys, I've read some the the threads on the sand issue but figured I'd make a new thread for a slightly different question. I've read all the debate on reef sand vs play sand and honestly instead of cutting corners money wise I'm going to go with the actual reef sand. Simply because there is no debate on if it reef safe or not. Ok so here's my question, which particular kind of reef sand do you use/would recommend. I'm partial to the Carib sea aragonite in my main tank and then Usually mix a little of that with crushed coral in my refugium. Open to any suggestions or insight on a possibly better sand. Thanks guys

New to the forum

Hey guys, just signed up after hearing about the forum from a friend. He told me that he has gotten some really great advice and ideas over the years from here. I'm not a beginner when it comes to fish by any means but I always love a good opinion/idea, and I always have questions for anyone with more experience with a certain thing. Anyways I plan to be on here a lot and hope to enjoy talking fish with you guys haha.

Live rock covered in pulsing xenia

Hey LARK,

Just curious if anyone would like a large piece of rock covered in pulsing xenia? I have about two or three large pieces, and might have some palys on them as well. Would like a piece of dry rock for trade if you have it, preferably a large piece. Let me know. There will be good healthy critters, snails, and sponges on the rock with the xenia as well.

Sand

Hi all,

I'm setting up a tank and I'm getting really confused about the sand. I'm going to try one of these fancy poll thingies to see how people break out on it.

I decided to do a shallow sand bed, I like the critters that dig around in it and the natural look. I've seen some beautiful BB tanks, but I'm willing to do the extra maintenance, and forgo the corals that require such a pristine tank.

Besides the poll, I would love some advice to understand better why one is better than another. Like why you like your sand, or wish you got something else. I'm planning to use dry sand cause this is a move up from the starter tank in my sig.

Thanks for helping!!

Diatom, need advice

My tank is about 4 or 5 months old at this point and everything has been doing well. I'm running a 90 gallon with a refugium. I recently removed the filter sock because of the constant overflowing (every two days) and based on what I've read, opinions are split on the value of the filter sock. My plan is to vacuum out any debris in the first section of my refugium if needed.

With all of that said, I suddenly have an outbreak of diatom brown algae on my sandbed and my water is not as clear as it has been. I preface this with my sand was immaculate for the longest time and my water has been crystal clear. I've tested the water and everything seems to be in check. My nitrates sit around 20 or so, but it has been that way for awhile. Is this normal? Should I take any action? Everything seems happy, but I certainly liked it better when the sand was clean and the water was clear. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

I decided to do a shallow sand bed, I like the critters that dig around in it and the natural look. I've seen some beautiful BB tanks, but I'm willing to do the extra maintenance, and forgo the corals that require such a pristine tank.

Besides the poll, I would love some advice to understand better why one is better than another. Like why you like your sand, or wish you got something else. I'm planning to use dry sand cause this is a move up from the starter tank in my sig.

Thanks for helping!!

Lighting Recommendation

reef ocotopus skimmer, hob

Hey everyone,

So I have the bh-1000 reef ocotopus skimmer for my 60 gallon tank. I am wondering if it is really worth it to buy the bh-2000 from Salty Supply ($207) or is there another way to upgrade my bh-1000 hob skimmer. I really wish I would of bought the bh-2000 from the start but I didnt and I have had the bh-1000 skimmer for about a year now. I love it and it works great but I would like to to skim a little more.

Thanks for the input

Rose Bubble Tip Anenomne

okay, so i was doing some research and i'm very much confused.

Feeding: people have been saying that RBTA don't need to be fed because they rely on the lights and that's their food source. While others say they feed their nems 1x a week or once every other day. ( i know that that is due to preference, but what confuses me is the lighting part.)

Growth: are these creatures slow growers or fast growers. Does it depend on the feeding/lighting?

Food: what do you recommend feeding? Ive been feeding my RBTA once every 3 days. I have only had mine for about 2 weeks, so i've only had the chance to feed it shrimp and phytoplankton.

my BTA is small and was hiding underneath a rock, but now it is exposed to the light which makes me happy. it hasn't moved since. it is in a location that receives med flow. i want the nem to grow fast:(:blob:

What is this?

I noticed in my tank today what looks to be white mold little blanket the size of a piece of gum or a little wider.

Never noticed it before and only thing i did lately was change out my filter media with new stuff. (Monthly canister change) tanks been up for over a year and levels are good.

Ammonia- 0 nitrite-0 nitrate-0

Ph 7.3-7.5

Gh- 60

Kh- 120

Try to keep gh and kh low because will add discus in the future.

Ps: will add photo after i have some more time

Coral Growth

Right now I have mostly softies (mushrooms zoas, polyps) with 2 LPS in my tank (will eventually be adding more LPS)

But I would like to increase the growth on all my corals. Is there anything I can do to supplement them. If so what type of products do you suggest?

Right now I just am doing water changes using reef crystals. Any help would be appreciated.

High Salinity 45ppt

In the words of Job from Arrested Development (for those who are fans)...

"I've made a terrible mistake"

Over the past month I have noticed a decline in all my coral even some mushrooms. Most effected were my montis (sunset, mystic, setosa and rainbow) and birds nest. All corals began to fade and bleach, some sooner than others. Could not figure out the sudden change and it became extremely discouraging.

Thought it may have been to an unexplicably high mag level of 1790. Use salifert to test, no supplementing of mag so that was a red flag but from what Ive read a high mag doesn't neccessarrily have a large negative impact.

So I was about to give up when I had a confirmatory test of salinity which was 45! Apparently, my calibration fluid had evaporated skewing calabration. My new calibration fluid arrived (this time I purchased the bottle dropper type) and my refracto was WAY off!

So I am slowly lowering with 1 gallon replaced DI water twice a day. Now down to 40ppt. BTW, I run a 40 gallon breeder/10 gallon sump

My question may be obvious, but is it likely the salinity of 45 caused all my problems? Is it possible the coral that have faded but not bleached will come back? I've heard coral are pretty flexible in their range of tolerance as long as it doesn't fluctuate. Also is there a relationship between elevated salinity and higher mag concentration? Should the mag level fall with salinity?

Big lesson learned, I thought it odd how much reef crystals I was adding to get 35 on my refracto. I work in the medical field and we always say "treat the symptoms not the number". Lesson learned, maybe others can benefit from my mistake.

Salt Mix Question - Not what you think

If I understand correctly, we want to mix up our salt batches at:

Salinity: 1.024 - 1.026

Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH

Calcium: 380-450

Magnesium: 1200-1400

Temperature: 76-80

For my salt, I think due to how easy it is to get, I'm going to use IO Reef Crystals. I was going to use Red Sea Coral Pro, but it's only available mail order around here. Not overly convenient. But I digress.

According to That Pet Place Salt Mix Guide, Reef Crystals mixes up at (1.026 SG):

Alkalinity: 13 dKH

Calcium: 490

Magnesium: 1440

Which leads me to my questions. My first batch of saltwater that i initially put in the tank, will be based on how many gallons I actually need (empty tank is 120 gallons, but Rock, Sand and Overflow box will reduce that number). The water going into the tank will be at 1.026, 13 dKH, 490, 1440.

All of these numbers are too high. Will they fall over time?

If I'm making new water for a 10% water change every week (or 20% every 2 weeks), and I want to maintain consistency, if the alkalinity and such does fall and it's at say 10, and I add 20 gallons of 13 dKH water...will that cause too big of a swing?

One of the reasons I am thinking about doing small weekly water changes is because A) I don't want to dose and B) Not set up to do automatic dosing...so I figure small water changes will keep the numbers consistent. Is that an accurate assumption?

What I plan to stock is fish, and some very very beginner, easy to care for, hard to kill corals. Not sure what everyone calls them, but that's what I'm calling them :)

Yup, another fish stocking idea thread...

I have a 90 gallon. It's doing well but I lost all 3 blue green chromis I put in. The original inhabitants are all happy (2 Oscellars, 1 Fox Face, 1 Coral Beauty, 1 Molly Miller Blenny).

My next fish was going to be a Kole Tang. But since the chromis didn't make it and I don't think I'll bother with them again I'm wondering what to add. The tank looks pretty empty with the fish in there now. Should I just go with the tang and then work on corals and inverts or are more fish okay? Suggestions on type?

Tuesday at yer service

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is ready. Your choice of oatmeat or cream of wheat, each cooked with fruit. Pecans on the side so you can add your own or not.

Had a good day off yesterday, and am ready for work :)

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone.

My first casualty.. I'm heartbroken

So I was looking on on my fish this evening and was missing one of my 1 week old oscellarus clowns. So I say to the wife "honey one of our clowns it's missing." after about 2 minutes of looking she's finds it next to the tank on the floor. Sad night for me... :((

I hope everyone is well.

I just hope everyone is well. I'm in the middle of the furguson issue living 20 mins from furguson and I'd like like to wish everyone well throughout this.

New 10 gallon no cycle idea...

Hey all,

Been in the hobby for around 7 years or so, maybe 8.

I have a 40B that's been running for about 6 months since I moved 300 miles and lost almost all of my livestock :( It was running for 2 years prior to that. Before that I had a 10 gallon nano for about 4-5 years.

Anywho... I'm going to set up the 10 at work :D

I was thinking I would be able to do so with a no cycle if I did the following:

Take 5 gallons of old water from my 40 during a water change, combine with 3-5 gallons of new water for the 10 gallon. Also seed my rock thats going into the 10 gallon in the sump of the 40 for about a week or two before putting it in with the 1/2 - 1/2 new/old from the 40 water.

What do you all think?

Is this an awesome master plan, or horribly flawed idea? Any suggestions would be fab.

My plan for the 10 is to run a no hermit, snail only CUC, 2 watchman goby's, and a clown or two. Nothing else. Probably add the clowns first, watchman's second.

I'm pretty excited and already have names picked out for the future fish. They're all going to be named after big personalities at the firm, with species according to personality :D SO MUCH FUN.

ATI 36" 6x39W Sunpower Fixture ///Tunze 9004 Skimmer

ATI 36" 6x39W SunpowerFixture - $400 shipped ------ Costs $470 new and 6 bulbs at $20 ea. Total: $590 Total Savings: $190

is in excellent condition. Purchased on Sep 25, 2014. I had a manufacturer issue with a ballast and it has been taken care so the fixture is 100%. I am selling this fixture because I got a new tank that is only 24" long from my wife as a gift. So I will just get new lights and sell this one. This fixture includes 3 Blue+, 2 Coral +, and 1 Purple + bulbs. This item will be shipped in its original package.

Tunze 9004 Skimmer - [s]$125[/s] [s]$110[/s] $100 Shipped

is in excellent condition. Includes everything from original package. Purchased on Oct 20. I am selling because my new tank includes a skimmer and will not need this skimmer. The skimmer will be shipped in its original package.

Basically finalized my stocking list on the 125 long tank

I have basically finalized my stocking list for my tank. Now I will end up adding maybe another small fish or two at a later date but this will be 100% for sure what I am going to order:

5 Banggai cardinals

1 diamond back goby

1 tiger watchman goby

1 scooter blenny

2 O. Clowns

6 fire fish

1 flasher wrasse

1 six line wrasse

1 dragon wrasse

2 blue throat triggers (M/F pair)

1 hippo tang

1 yellow tang

1 Hawaiian tang (black body and orange tail)

1 standard fox face

2 cleaner shrimp

1 ribbon eel

Curious on feedback or possible suggestions for something else small to add also at a later date. And as much as I do appreciate the opinions and viewpoints from different angles, I WILL be stocking these fish in my tank. And im sorry to say but the recommendations on live aquaria are not law, they are simply suggestions.

Reef cleaners sent me hitch hikers?

It's been about 2 months since I added my first CUC from reefcleaners.org. Today I found 2 hermit crabs. Couldn't tell what kind because I only saw tip of legs. I ordered crab free CUC. Anyone else have hitch hikers from them? Now I may know why some snails are empty. Should I remove them?

eBay 165 watt led: full spectrum or white/blue?

I think there was a thread debating these. Is there a consensus? I have only a current marine orbit 48" and even my green mushroom isn't happy. Wife may get me some eBay led for x-mas. So not sure which. I'll get 2 for my 90 gallon. The white/blue are a few bucks less.

Pointers on my setup *Pics Included*

Im wondering if anyone can give me some pointers on my setup. I have a 4 bulb 36" T5 fixture with 3 actinics and 1 daytime bulbs, along with 10 cool white and neutral white 3W LED's. Im not sure if the added LED's are overkill and doing more harm than good or whether i should keep the LED's and remove 2 of the T5 bulbs.

This was my setup a few years ago before i moved. Certain things refused to live for me but the things that did, did okay, but i never got much growth.

This is my current Setup

As you can see im at war with hair algae. Im trying to up my water changes. I would also like to add a skimmer to the system. Right now i just have filter pads in the box in the sump that i clean and i vaccum the sand on occasion

This is a before shot. Shortly after i set up my tank, when everything was doing okay.

New guy

Hello,

I recently purchased a used 75 g setup. This will be my first sw tank. I have been around freshwater fish (mainly Koi) for 10 years so I have an understanding of what it takes to keep a quality water environment. Anyways, I will have many questions to ask, so hopefully I came to the right place!

Thanks, Craig

Best fish to add to 75g with only one clownfish

I recently purchased a 75g tank set up for FOWLR. Came with lights, pump, heater, skimmer, live rock,, sand and a lone clownfish. I moved it and kept as much of the water as I could since it was a short move across town. Anyways tank has been up and running for about a week and a half with no issues. So, I'm looking at adding a friend to keep the clownfish company. What is the best type of fish to add? would it be ok to add another clown? Open to any ideas as I'm new to the hobby and don't know much about compatibility.

Thanks

Hi,

I have a 36w ballast and the motherboard. See attached picture. How do I wire these up?

Thanks

Tank Cycles

The general opinion is if something dies, there is something wrong. That is not always the case. Things can die for a few reasons not directly related to anything under our control and there is not always a need to add something or remove something. Fish die of old age as many of mine did. Some fish such as pipefish and seahorses only live a few years and if the thing is 2 years old when you get it, it is ready to croak. Some fish such as clowns live over 20 years but small gobies may only live 5 or 6 years. So no matter what you do, that's their lifespan. Corals "can" live forever but rarely do in a tank. 4 or 5 years doesn't mean much in the life of a coral. 4 or 5 years don't mean much in the life of a tank as that is not even half the age of a hermit crab. Success with a Moorish Idol is not 5 years or even 10 years even though no one has kept one for that length of time. If you keep a tank long enough you will notice cycles. Some cycles last for a few years so if your tank is 5 years old, you may not notice these. My tank has had cycles of hair algae, bristle worms, macro algae, flatworms, cyano, carpal tunnel syndrome etc. These things could last a year or two then disappear. For years my tank had majano anemones all over the place. My wife eliminated them and annoyed them every day with a Majano Wand then one day, they all disappeared. Why? I have no Idea and neither does anyone else. I just lost a few torch corals. Why? I also have no idea but I think it is just normal coral wars as the poisons they exude at certain times of the year can kill other corals. In the sea it corresponds with phases of the moon but in a tank it could be what time I watch TV to as corals don't seem to know the difference between TV light, moon light or the shine off my bald head. Lighting cycles mean everything to corals and we have absolutely no idea what they are thinking or how it affects them. If a few corals die and you tested the water, changed the water and offered up tea leaves to the moon while waving chicken bones over the tank and you can't figure out why they died, you just have to get over it as we don't know everything. I generally pour myself a nice glass of merlot and go our and buy more corals. Of course if all our corals start to die, something we missed is probably the cause because generally the corals exuding poisons don't kill themselves. Most of my corals are growing very well so I can "assume" all is well. If metal poisoning, low salinity, disease, paint fumes, or rap music is the culprit, all or at least most of the corals will be affected. But above all else we must remember that this is a "hobby". It is an expensive hobby but there is no end game, no goal, no prizes, it is the journey that matters, like sailing, you don't need to actually get anywhere, the trip is the adventure. If all my corals turned into snot tomorrow, I would clean out the tank and get excited that I would have the opportunity to re aquascape. It is what it is.

Refugium/Sump or Canister...Opinions???

Hello all!

I am hoping to get some opinions and recommendations on a filtration system for a 40G Breeder set up that I am going to build over the next few months. I know, for the most part, what I am going to have in the tank, but I can not land on a filtration system.

My initial thought was a canister filter. Something nice and sturdy, high powered to keep the water nice and healthy for my inhabitants. But I am also wanting to obtain coral for this tank. Would this create enough water flow? Could it handle the sensitivity of the coral? So then I thought refugium...

But are the refugiums worth it? Short of building one myself, they seem to be on the expensive side of things. Is it worth waiting the extra month in order to make things more complicated... that is what I can't decide.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions or personal experiences. This is actually my first post on this site, so if I am missing any pertinent information, please let me know and I will answer any questions.

Thank you!
