I'll have my 55g sump up and running soon and along with that my 55g DT will be finished completing the cycle soon so I was thinking of the easiest ways to clean this beast of a system. I thought crossed my mind, what if while siphoning my sand I let the siphon hose lead into the inlet of my sump with a filter sock on the end of it? No this is not a way to get around water changes. I'm still going to be changing 10% a week, but before the sump I was changing 10% and cleaning 1/2 the sand bed each week and now I have a sump to clean out as well.
This would be how I would go about doing this.
Clean glass, lights, blow off rocks
Filter sock on end of siphon & stick into sump inlet baffle in sump
Siphon 1/2 of sand bed
Filter sock removed
Clean sump while changing 10% water
Refill water
The only things I can think of that won't allow this to work is my sump return pump not being able to keep up in which case I can cut off the overflow and use the siphon as a main feed for the sump while cleaning and detritus from the sandbed getting through the filter sock
Any input and thoughts on this process? Why it will and/or will not work?
