So here's some background...moved everything to the 300 dd 99% sps
Experienced slight bleaching and severe browning which now I see was the coral over exerting and washing it's colors....I have since moved all of the coral to the very bottom of the tank on eggcrate and in 6 days the color is slowly but noticeably coming back...prior to going in the 300 all the frags were in my grow out tank which is plumbed into the same system and it has a 150 or 175 can't remember watt hqi halide over it and they had the most brilliant vibrant color they have ever had!!
So in a nutshell...
Grow out tank...150/175 watt Phoenix 14 k hqi AMAZING color very slow growth
Old dt...4 ai sols very pale washed out color growth was non existent
New dt....3 reeflux 12 k 400 watt halides...coral placed in rock work...pale color/bleaching VERY predominant loss of color and shift to brown no growth
Coral placed on eggcrate at bottom of tank...colors coming back by the day growth is speeding up drastically
Halides are approximately 14 inches off water surface and on for 5 hours a day
I am seriously thinking of switching to 250 watt 20 k radiums which would be fairly expensive considering I cheaped out initially and bought vertex ballast because they were on sale and they are NOT switchable so I would have to buy ballasts and bulbs
Another option would be to switch to 20k 400 watt radiums as I have read that they have a little less par than the reeflux's because of the "20 k" spectrum..would it be enough to allow me to start raising the coral??
What's everyone think??
Will the coral eventually adapt to this intense lighting or will they always be borderline bleaching with pale washed colors due to the extreme lighting??
I want amazing color with average to above average growth
I DO NOT want to just slap a ton of actinics on here to take my eyes into believing the colors are good
Sorry for the long post but I need to get some help on this as all of my coral sitting on eggcrate is not appealing to me lol
Thanks!!
Stewie
