OK, so I finally got around to buying a refractometer and I calibrated it with 35ppt calibration fluid. I tested my tank which with the swing arm hydrometer was testing between 1.024-1.025, with the refractometer I'm testing 1.030. What are the effects of high salinity? I haven't had very good luck with corals growing and wondering if this is why? The only thing I've been able to get grow is a Kenya tree, GSP, and xenia, I've tried zoas, acans, and in my older tank had hammer corals, all of which would slowly die, but I've been using the swing arm all along.
So what effects do high salinity have? It sounds like its an effective ich treatment just like hyposalinity, maybe that's why I have never seen ich...
I have raised the float on my ATO to dump in some fresh water to slowly start bringing the S.G. down. Will mix my water change water for this weekend a little light too in order to bring it down a little, but I'm assuming I need to do this pretty slowly... any other suggestions on effects?
