Hello all,
New to this forum stuff so please forgive me if I am doing something wrong as this is my first time joining a forum.
So the reason I have come here to pick your brains is my son(10 years old) and myself are starting our first saltwater tank and need all the help we can get.
We are starting off with a 55 gallon tank. I have purchased 40 lbs of live sand(Caribea Caribean Live Sand), 200 gallon box of instant ocean salt, refractometer, 35 lbs of base rock and will be purchasing 20 lbs of live rock from my lfs when ready. I have a emperor 400 power filter and am still undecided if i should use it or not. I have 2 850gph power heads. I have 2 standard fluorescent lights
I am still waiting for all of this stuff to be delivered so my tank is still sitting on my floor waiting to be setup. I am going to be using all RO water for the fill up. I have not purchased a skimmer yet but will be.
I guess my couple questions for the professionals would be:
Do i need the skimmer right away or should i be fine without it for a couple weeks while the tank is cycling:
Do yous think i have enough movement with those 2 power heads?
Should i use the HOB power filter or ditch it all together?
Is 20 pounds of live rock enough to go with the 35 lbs of base rock?
Im sure i will think of more. Appreciate all comments and suggestions. Looking for some feedback on the best way to start off this tank as well. Starting off with live rock and some fish when cycled and hoping down the road to add some coral
Thank you all in advanced.
