RODI issues and a giant hermit shell

So two stories that run together here. One is educational other is entertaining.

First the educational one.

For a while i have had growing algae issues, it has slowly taken out much of my smaller corals. I increased water changes syphoned my sand. Finally i set up a phosphate reactor. but the algae didnt stop. Finally i checked my TDS meter on my RODI unit and it was reading at a 1. Not to high but high enough that my water changes were causing issues and not helping them. i order replacement filters and will be changing it out soon.

Next the fun one. So when i bought hermit shells they came in two sizes, the size all my hermit crabs already had and big as can be. So i put the smallest(of the oversized ones) into the aquarium and 2 of them went quickly but the biggest in there sat in a corner. i got excited every time i saw a hermit climb into it but they realized they are to small and would leave and get back into there old shell.
Then yesterday a hermit climbed into it and i thought nothing of it, figuring he would climb out like the rest. Tonight i look into my tank and see him, he has traveled halfway across the tank. And there is a wake of missing algae in his path. I think he is eating everything he can to grow into his giant shell.

Long story short remember to check the TDS on your RODI water and it looks like i am going to have a massive hermit in my tank soon.
