Protein Skimmer Setup Questions

Got a Tunze 9001 skimmer for my 10G nano. It's probably the smallest and was the best all around after research. Their support is also great for their products. Had 3 main issues/questions:

1) The surface skim attachment leaves it looking very large on a small tank. I've seen numerous people set it up without the surface intake and simply use the intake that sits about 4 inches below the water surface. Is that sufficient and wouldn't this defeat a good deal of the issue with surface?

2) Setup is interesting with 3 options.

The first is (contact foam) factory setup where the out and in both are in this little plastic chamber. I'm sure there is something smart about this setup and it's supposed to limit microbubbles. But wouldn't the mix of in/out in one area be a bad idea? I've seen many use the second setup is "standard setup" that is "suitable for all aquariums" which is the intake facing the back of the tank and out into that little plastic receptacle area. I've stuck a piece of microfoam in there to both limit microbubbles and also grab any larger pieces of gunk in the water to act as a mini filter. This seems like the optimal setup. Third way is with the surface skimmer attachment.

3) Do I need Purigen / Phosguard? I bought both just in case I may need them. I find it handy to have these items just in case you end up with some failure and need to use them to filter the water and can do so with a standard mechanical filter. Now I understand Phosguard is best used for removing excess phosphates (I had a hair algae issue and tried to reduce them to zero.) But Purigen seems like it's useful and some use it, some don't. (A) Do I need it? (B) Where could I use it if the answer is Yes? I have a small mechanical filter that I might hook up to use if and as needed.

Thanks for all input. This has been an interesting transition this past year...
