Let's begin by saying I am new to marine aquariums. Pretty experienced with freshwater though. My 65 gallon Red Reef has been set up for about 2 months. I used water from my LFS to start and have been doing 25% weekly water changes with RO/DI water from my Barracuda Ro/DI unit. The rest of the setup is as follows:
65 gallon Red Sea Reefer with ATO feature
Esshops PSH 75 protein skimmer
38" Current Orbit Marine Pro LED
Specific Gravity = 1.024
Nitrates = .25 ppm
Ammonia = 0
Nitrites = 0
Phosphorus = .5 ppm
Temp. = 79 deg. F
Two weeks ago I had:
2 Open Brains
1 Yellow Colony Polyp
2 Button Polyps
2 Zoas
1 Pumping Xenia
1 Colt
1 Yellow Leather
1 Pink Leather
1 Torch
1 Long Tentacle Plate
1 Short Tentacle Plate
1 Hairy Mushroom
1 Green Star Polyp
1 Condylactis Anemone
1 Bubble Tip Anemone
2 Percula Clowns
3 PJ Cardinals
1 Bangai Cardinal
1 Six-Line Wrasse
1 Coral Beauty
1 Royal Gramma
1 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Blood Shrimp
Assorted snails and crabs
About two weeks ago a die-off started. First I lost the 2 Perculas, next the Royal Gramma, then the Coral Beauty and today the Blood Shrimp. The Condy and the two Open Brains are starting to show signs of distress (the Condy is eating but quite shrunken, the Brains are not eating).
Any thought about what is going on? Have I been too eager and added too much too fast? Could my RO filter not be doing it's job? Is this just normal cycling? For the first 6 weeks all was wonderful and I got very cocky. Nothing to it. Easy. Well I learned my lesson - nothing worthwhile is easy. Any thoughts that might help out a newbie like myself?
