Hi everyone, looking for some information on a very contentious issue. I have been dealing with a very bad algae outbreak for the last few weeks and have been doing small 5-10% daily water changes syphoning the sand. Now the sand is less than an inch at most places and down to the glass in others. So I wanted to add some new sand. With my knowledge of reef tanks I wrongly suspected that paying the extra 4x cost for live sand would be excellent and save my tank cycling again. Well after reading many an article I now understand adding live sand is more likely to cause a cycle!
Well I have two bags of the stuff and am now looking for advice. Do I rinse it out in RO water, which will kill the bacteria but also rinse out pockets of toxins? Do I rinse it in salt water? Or do I try and keep it in a vessel with salt water and a flow for a few days and keep testing it? Or in everyones opinion should I just add it as it is (and if I do should i add it over a few days or not?)
Finally, when I add it should i remove the existing sand from underneath? It does have quite a lot of detritus in it.
