The Friday before Memorial Day, I added a 3 head aycan and 20 head zoa frag. They both slimed up good when they went into the tank but after a few days they were open pretty much, bout 1/4 of the zoas stayed closed. Figured they would open up eventually. But they never really did.
I was fighting diatoms likely due to using tap water. So 2 weeks ago I did a 20% WC using distilled water. Then I got my rodi issues cleared up and began making good water. About a week ago I noticed my once thriving however small frag of large green zoos was staying closed more. Did some reading and decided to remove my sand bed and do a 40% WC on Friday. I also broke up my LR to make a more natural scape and make cleaning easier. Hoping that this would help keep water more stable. I drained all the original tank water, rock and livestock into bucket then removed sand. Rinsed tank out then reassembled everything. Left lights off until this am.
So a few of my other zoa heads have opened, mushrooms open but not full as normal, gsp opened well and Kenya tree is acting normal. My best zoa frag is what worries me. Has a brown tint to it and closed up tight. I did notice 2 head had grown off frag onto LR and were subsequently torn off in the process. Did not glue anything down at this point.
Ro/di Water is 0 tds mixed with RC salt to 1.025
Temp 78
PH 7.64 tested with API (not quite to 7.8 color) and new, calibrated PH meter.
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 10ppm
Calcium 480-520
dkh 8 or 145ppm
Phosphate <0.25ppm. Looked like 0 but found that hard to believe.
Running a aqua tech 20-40 gallon power filter with LR rubble in filter area for flow. Ordered maxi jet 1200 PH but have never had one this far and everything was fine.
Other livestock is one turbo snail and 3 nassarius. Feed tank pinch of flake food 2-3 x week.
When should I do another WC to bring down nitrates? Are nitrates causing zoas to close up or are they dying?
