My tank has had nitrates off the chart since I broke the huge rock two weeks ago and put it back in, 3 days later I got rid of that rock (well was like 5 of em at that point) so today ive began doing the stepped waterchange since I have nothing but 2 snails, some LR and a buncha bristle worms, im on the back end of the change and im lookin at 40 ppm now instead of off the charts( and my water level is only 20% right now), I also did a 50% change Saturday night and it still read off the charts.. so basic math says I should have ~10ppm nitrates when I get the water level back to 100% which im happy with. Much better then going bonkers because nitrates are sky high..
But now I need some advice.
People have said to get rid of my HOB filter (I will eventually, I have to make a new stand in order to fit in a sump) so I was thinking of just removing the media and throwing in some sand and LR for now, or at least just running it empty for the water flow. What do you guys think?
55gal long, 5 piece LR, 1-2" sandbed, small powerhead
Also will a airstone help with keeping nitrates down?
