Just stopping in to create another giant algae removal thread for TRT hoping for some good before and after pics.
Ive seen some posts on here lately about algae and wanted to throw in my two cents. everyone has a way they like to beat algae, its an ages old battle. no way is best or the other methods would stop getting used. current algae methods aren't sufficient, or this method would have the following it does.
we fight algae using peroxide, all kinds of reefs from pico reefs to mixed sps systems at 300 gallons, so its a decent resource to have handy when trying to rid a tank of many different invaders. I dont see any active threads discussing its use here so it seems pertinent.
fifty ways to skin a cat, we usually take the leftovers. we are usually 3rd or 4th attempt you w see in our cure threads.
if you did other methods and never got cleaned up, consider this. we didnt produce 4 years and a thousand treatments of fail :) lots of good discussion is in these work threads, hoping to make a new one here. the before and after pics are insane.
Even though Ive been a long time member I dont know what rules are about linking to other sites. Well just one site mainly :) so pls correct if I do wrong. unfortunately the bulk of my work was at that site so here it is
google: pico reef pest algae challenge thread
thats the main read. if you have a tank of algae, a two hour read is worth it, to be algae free.
Here's a sis thread from nr.com I know we are cool there:
http://ift.tt/1pMjJ4C
My goal isnt to get into philosophical debates about use of this, or any other atypical reef tank chemical (vsv, bayer insect dips for flatworms, goat de wormer for my freshwater shrimp tank, driveway de icer for mg, on and on)
my goal is to simply fix tanks. stop a months and in cases years long battle. stop it cold.
highlights:
-no your filter bacteria are not at risk
-yes you can treat a full running sps reef but we prefer other ways, in the thread
-the most sensitive animal in a reef tank to peroxide is the lysmata cleaner, plan accordingly
-external treatments are the preferred method as explained
-some invaders dont respond to phosphate controls
-learn to see that which removes algae differently from that which prevents it, thats our take on the matter
-GHA is the easiest thing to beat with this method, and the fastest. kill times are often overnite. Neomeris annulata and highly invasive dinoflagellate species were the hardest to fight and didnt work out each time.
-you will see the main focus in the thread evolved into controlling collateral loss at a near perfect rate, while algae cures went about 80-90% long term sustained per the threads. My own tank is the testbed, I input more 35% peroxide into my reef than any person around and draw info from that to convey out to others.
the method has both imperfections and limitations, and is very highly predictable in its action within a reef tank. we can make predictions about your reef tank's time tables solely off before pics, to get started here.
if you are desperate pls start this new algae challenge thread with before pics, or if you want to head off an invasion before its really bad pls post before pics
