I have had a lionfish for about a month. He is a dark color and last week I noticed in the center of him he had no stripes just black and than the strips started. Than yesterday morning he looked almost pitch black, only his face and tail had stripes, about 6 hours later he was back to normal. I feed him and within 20 min he was pitch black again. Any suggestions? I read that they can darken when trying to mate? or could he be sick?
