Semi newbie questions.

Hello all! Well I will start with saying while I have had a nano saltwater tank before it has been a long time since I had to break down my tank and I will admit I made many newbie mistakes and I had no patience. Because of time and space constraints I was not able to get back into it until now. I do not have the tank set up at all at the moment and I am starting mostly from scratch.

I will be using a 16 gallon bow front and want to do a canister fitler with it. So here are my starting questions....

1. I have some dry rock from my old saltwater tank and I lot from my freshwater tank, probably more than 60 lbs, which I know is way too much for only a 16 gallon, but I know how much it costs and just wont part with it just in case I want to do a larger tank later. However I have been reading and most of the posts say you have to add live rock to seed the old dry stuff. I really dont want to do this because purchasing live rock has brought me nothing but grief with the hitchhikers they come with. In fact one such hitchhiker took over my nano and that is what cause me to break that tank down. So the question is .... do I have to seed my rock with live rock or is there an alternative?

2. Also anyone here use a canister filter on their tank? How do you like it? What do you have yours layered with? Any helpful hints?

3. Last question is, does anyone else have a 16 gallon bow front saltwater tank going? If you have pictures or post/threads on here could you post links to them? I would love to take a look!

Thank you all in advance for your help and I am looking forward to getting back into the hobby.
