Odd ball feather duster

I bought 2 pink feather dusters... (the soft tubed guys)... one is odd because he is attached to an empty snails shell... but not the point lol my other one had about 4 to 6 inches of "old" tube... and about an inch of new tube and sand from the pet stores tank... after putting him in the tank he started "blooming" in my hand... i set him where he was in current but not getting blasted... he was there in the morning still out the tube... now for the odd part... he hadn't came out the top for about 8 hours... which I took to be a bad sign... but when I crouched to look at the base of the shell I noticed he was "bloomed" out the opposite side of the old shell... now I'm positive he was facing the right direction (see pictures attached later) I brushed him to make him move and he pulled back into the old tube... hope this is coherent... lol... just wanted to share and hear about others experience with anything similar
