filter sock hole size

This might be a dumb question but I cannot find the info anywhere. I finally have my 55 gallon tank to build my sump and I was wondering what size hole do I need to cut for a 4" filter sock? Do I need a 4" hole or a little bit smaller. Is the sock measured from the inside of the rim or the outside?
