Skimmer water level in sump???

Hi all. I acquired a Eshoops PSK-200 that is sitting in my sump / refugium. It's currently in about 8" or 9" of water and even on it's lowest possible setting it's overflowing the skim basket with bubbles that turn into water. It's running the original pump. On an older skimmer there was room that i could put a ball valve in place and regulate flow but that's not possible on this one.

Is there any other way to adjust this other than having 12" of water or more in my sump?

That just seems excessive and i didn't think it was supposed to be that high. I do have a jbjlighting ATO with a 10 gallon reserve that can keep the water where I need it.

Thanks for your feedback...
