The perfect seed rock

I want to seed my new tank as cleanly as possible.

My current tank has hair algae, bubble algae, some lilypad looking macro, a little red hair, NEVER ENDING AIPTASIA WAR, etc.

I want to start the new tank off as clean as possible

  • I know algae is symptom of excess nutrients - but that doesn't mean i have to introduce it

  • I would give my left arm to at least keep the aiptasia out

These are the ideas I have:

  1. Put new piece of high quality base rock in my current tank's fuge for a few weeks with no lights. The fuge area is currently empty and has just become a settling area - with no lights.

Although Coraline would not grow either some spores from the main tank should be on the rock at any given time... but by that logic, so should the pest algae spores. Can Coraline be scraped off and transplanted?

  2. Find a place that online that specializes in clean live rock for this very purpose. I'm just looking for 1 piece.

  3. Trust my LFS - probably where I got the pests to start with

  4. This just came to me! What about that 'Live Sand' that the fish store sells? I could get a bag, spread it around, then syphon it all out after a couple weeks after it has seeded everything

Which idea do you guys like?

Any other ideas?
