Hi everyone!
So I am brand new to this, but have been spending a lot of time researching and reading these forums. So tonight I decided to register and join so that I may get to know everyone here.
I thought I would start this thread to document my experience into this new exciting world. So feel free to offer up advice and ask questions, and I hope that this may serve someone else new down the road with entry into this special world.
A little about me: I have been keeping freshwater fish for a number of years now. I currently have a 50 gallon corner tank with Tropheus, and a small 10 gallon with just a few random fish that the girlfriend won't allow me to bring the the LFS.
My new setup: A 29 gallon Coralife Biocube off craigslist. It has the API test kit and many other chemicals. It came with 2 fluval PHs, a coralife UV sterilizer. So far I picked up an RO DI system, a new heater, Instant Ocean salt mix, timers for the lights, tossed the bioballs and bought large sponge filters with filter floss to replace them with, carbon, Phosguard, Purigen, etc. I also purchased 30 lbs of florida rock from reefcleaners, with the plan to seed it with LR and some LS from the LFS. (Any thoughts on this?)
I have no problem being patient, but here is a question. We are going out of town for 3 weeks, leaving in about 2 weeks (this is not normal, it's our honeymoon... and we're driving, thus the 3 weeks). My hope was to place the dry rock and the live rock in the tank and let it cycle for the time that we are gone. I can have my brother stop by and top off water and what not. Would it be alright to just throw a raw shrimp in and let it go for the time? Or should it be monitored a little bit more closely, even in this stage? Are water changes crucial even this early, or would it be better to leave the toxins in there to establish the nitrogen cycle?
The goal will be to eventually have a well balanced tank with a solid CUC, some soft corals, and a few small fish.
What am I missing? Any advice? Thanks in advance!
