I am thinking about upgrading my sump and using my current sump as a display refugium. This is all for the want of a fish...this fish to be exact http://ift.tt/1xeC7V2 Now the only reason I can't have this fish right now is because I have some small fish that would be eaten (clowns, goby, sixline). Selling the fish isn't really an option exept for maybe the wrasse. The others my family and I like to much (mind you I haven't talked to my parents about this yet. It's still to new in my head to go there. Trying to figure out all the details and see if I really do want this first). So I got the brilliant idea to replace my current 30 or so gallon sump with a 55 gallon sump. I would DIY the new sump myself. Then I would use my current sump and use it for a display refugium. Now I am only 16 and had a burnout a couple years ago with my fish. I just had to many tanks and ya, it was too much to handle. I never got rid of all my tanks, but I still feel like this sometimes so I have to slow down at times to decide if this is going to hurt me more then help. It's not fun feeling burnt out, especially with something you love. The maintince just gets to me sometimes (waterchanges mostly). I just try my best to plug along though as I love this hobby, even with all it's stresses. I just need to know that if set up right it will actually make my tank easier to maintain instead of just complicating things. I know refugiums half the time are veiwed as bad, but I would use it as it should be; a refuge for my fish to escape predation. I wouldn't use it as a filter or anything like that (though if macro algae didn't affect much I would add some), I would just try to keep the environment the same in both tanks. I don't really want one to be a lagoon style because that harbors nutrients instead of getting rid of it like I want. Really I just want it to harmlessly add extra water volume and keep my fish safe. The sump would just hold my equipment and add extra water volume to the tank as well. With help from TRT I also just discovered what kind of skimmer I have and what size of tank its for. It's a Coralife Super Skimmer and it is rated for tanks up to 220 gallons. My tank is 120 gallons as of now. The Coralife pump has also been replaced with a mag pump. So agian I just need to know if this is going to cause more stress then what I am looking for right now, or if it will really help the stability of my tank in the long run? Stupid fish! Why dose it have to call to me!!! Thanks for all the help guys!
