I've been googling for over an hour trying to figure out what this is, but I can't for the life of me figure it out. It's a new tank, barely 2 1/2 weeks into starting it. This has shown up and maybe I'm crazy but it seems to be slowly growing/spreading. I don't know how to even describe it so hopefully pictures help. It's the brownish/grey spotted mass that's on the rock.

OMG, What a cluster*^$&
So i made the switch this weekend from my 75 to my new 180. i had a friend come by to help me move my 75 and move the new one into place, but then he left and i did it all myself. Holy ****, biggest cluster ^%$# i have ever been a part of. I have never transferred a tank like this and it showed. Friday night is was up till 2, getting everything i could ready for the switch. Saturday night i was up till 5 and got the new tank up with sand and rock and water in, but once i started all the pumps, i had leaks from the bulkheads. it was 5, i drained the overflow boxes and went to bed. Got up 4 hours later and started to fix the leaks. for every leak i fixed 2 more showed up. Finally got leaks fixed and the fish and coral in the tank mid day. I had my coral in a backup tank with powerhead and heater and then the fish in a 50 gallon tub with some LR, heater, powerhead and air bubbler. They were in holding for about 24 hours before going into the new tank. All fish have survived (for now) and more shockingly, all coral has survived and actually seem to be doing better in the new tank. i say shockingly because most of the coral took some damage in removing from old tank rock. fish and coral went in on sunday and all seemed well, until sunday night just before bed. I notice a bulkhead with a drop of water, i watched it for a while and it was very slow, maybe 1 drop every 10-15 minutes, i was dead tired so i decided to just put a container under it and go to bed and address it in the morning. Monday morning and its leaking much much more. The container is overflowing and the bottom of the stand is soaked. I tighten the bulk head a little more and it cracks. FML. So i drain the box, thankfully have another bulkhead on hand. I replace it and no leak. its now been about 36 hours and no leaks. All fish and coral are good and i love the tank. It was utter hell getting it done. Hands are tore up, shoulders and back hurt, ass hurts from sitting on the tile floor for so long, but...... i sit back now, basement in utter disarray, with a beer in my hand and watching the new setup and its worth it. My wife, who thinks im an idiot and doesnt understand the love i have for this, even came to me, dodging buckets and trashcans and hoses, and tools and towels....lots of wet towels and said she was proud of me, she said most people would have given up or hired somebody to do it after all the **** i went through. It felt good. Come tomorrow it will be "clean this mess up" but for now, i enjoy
Hi! New to saltwater. :)
Hi! I just received a 90 gallon reef tank with 30 gallon sump very unexpectantly. I have only ever had freshwater tanks so this is a whole new thing for me. Wish me luck! Thanks!
Feeding Dragonet Mandarin
Hello, I'm looking for some advice on fattening up my Mandarin. We've had her for about 5 months in a 125g, 130lbs live rock and I'm growing Tisbee and Tigger pods which I add about 1L of pod soaked water to the tank every week.
The problem is that when we purchased little Mandy, we didn't realize she had one damaged eye, which definitely affects her ability to hunt. She was also trained to eat mysis in the sump, however in the main tank it blows around a bit too much for her.
We have tons of pods still in the tank, but I think that because of her damaged eye that she just doesn't see them, or has a hard time tracking them. Her stomach has begun to recede and I really don't want to lose her, since she is the sole reason for setting up a tank this big.
I've tried putting the mysis and pods in a glass jar according to the "Mandarin Diner Guide" to keep them in one spot, however she will only hunt the pods which make it to the outside of the jar and won't go into it, thankfully only the starfish know how to get the treats inside, so she doesn't have much competition at the moment. Is there a way to improve on the "Mandarin Diner" technique, or another way to feed this fish? I'm debating moving her back to the sump for a little while, but I think she'll wipe it out before I get her trained again.
Any ideas guys?

Can I bring corals on the plane
Hello everyone, I was wondering if when I go to Israel, would I be able to bring back wild caught corals on the plane? Have any of you guys tried doing this? What was the results?
12 Week Stage Questions
So I have my first saltwater tank and have some questions and hopefully some guidance of how to go forward.
I am almost 100 percent certain I have cycled. But here some question and issue I have with the tank
The tank is 75 gallons with a 30 gallon slump. It has a skimmer, a combined GFO/Carbon reactor, 4 power heads ( 2 main hydros, 1 small hdyro for the back and a power head to agitate the top water) 2 Chinese LED lights (eBay specials I believe)
Weekly water changes / sand cleanings. Daily blowing off of rocks
Water is clean. Everything standard is 0 except for ammonia. But I believe there is an error in the API test kit. LRS says its good and I tested their water and it showed small ammonia as well. So I think there is an issue with API test kits.
1. So the brown hairy/slime algae is hard to keep a bay. With in a day there is a good amount on the rocks and the soft corals. I blow it off with a baster but back the next day. It starts to get onto the glass and the sand. I scrape it off the glass and vac the sand ever week. Is this normal? When will it stop, or slow down?
2. Had 30% live rock and 70 percent dead rock. The dead rock went from nice and white, to brown, now its algae green. Now its getting the nice purple spots. Does this sound about right for dead rock to live rock progression?
3. Have tons of little bugs at night, looks like clear cockroaches. I am guess they are some sort of pod? Do I need something to control these guys or just let them do their job?
4. Stock, I have 2 chromes, 1 emerald crab, 1 urchin, 9 snails, 10 hermits, 1 cleaner shrimp and a long bristle worm (very smart and can't catch him). Do I need more for a clean up crew? How much more live stock can I add? Looking to add 2 clowns, lawnmower, possible another shrimp but worried they may fight?
5. PH is 7.8 - 8.0 I have done everything to raise the PH but it wont budge. Added more rocks to the slump, more water agitation at the top of both the display tank and the slump. It won't budge at all. Will it go up in time?
Thank you all for view this post. I know most of these answer may be found in other areas but I get frustrated trying to sort and read them all. Just hoping for a onestop shop here.

Seaclone Skimmer Question
I realize that this isn't the greatest skimmer, but I got it in trade and it actually seems to be working so bear with me.
The skimmer actually seems to be working pretty well so I am not inclined to replace it right now. My question is with the pump- it uses the old styule maxijet 1200. This pump is literally louder than my overflow and mag 9.5 return pump combined. Actually the hum is probably like 4 or 5x louder. I don't know how old the pump is, I assume a few years.
Any ideas on how to make it quieter?
These pictures are after about 4 days of skimming. Bioload is not that high right now, so I am impressed it is pulling anything at all to be honest.

Lifereef Skimmers
I have a lifereef VS3-48. There are so many different ways that the external lifereef skimmers can be setup. If you have a lifereef how do you run it? what modifications have you made?
For example I am about to change out the stock mazzei 978 for a 1078.
I am also currently feeding it in a traditional fashion with a mag 24 in the sump. soon to be a jebao dct 1500.
I am also interested in hooking up the counter current nozzle and have recieved Jeff from lifereef's opinion on the matter.
Just looking to see what input you guys have.
Its pulling pretty decent. I just want to play with it

Water Change Routine
Water changes are a pain on a larger system. In my case this is simply because of the quantity of water that I need to change. I have a 240g DT and a 75g sump. My water change practice currently involves using a 55g brute can (on wheels). My ro/di unit is in the same room as my tank, which is the front living room. So essentially I have the can sitting in my living room for a couple of days while I fill it with ro/di water and then mix up my saltwater. I then use a PH and pump water into a 5 gallon bucket and make several trips back and forth to the toilet as I drain the sump. I usually empty 7 buckets. I then fill my sump from the brute can. I usually have a 5 gallon bucket left over that I keep on hand for adding to the tank as necessary (skimmer).
I would like to keep large volumes of water premixed but just cannot seem to dedicate anymore real estate in the house or garage for my hobbies. I have all my aquarium stuff, and a gun/reloading room. My wife wont put up with anymore areas of the house being "taken".
So my question is how do you guys store your water and what are your water change procedures? There has to be something I can change to make this more efficient.

Back to it Tuesday!
Fight the urge to use '*' today, though it seems like a *onday. Good morning TRT friends, and....HAPPY TUESDAY! Still warm and humid, but staying in the low 80's and chance of showers. Fresh cinnamon folls to go with our coffee and pink milk to get the day started. Hope all had a great day yesterday. Beautiful pics Jeff! Any more? Hope all are well, and get to have some fun today, all the best,

Going from 75 up to a 125 need advice.
Hello fellow reefers, I am new to this site but have been keeping saltwater tanks for many years, 10+. I have almost always had a 75 gal or smaller tank so I have never ran into this situation before. Here is my question, what is the best way to upgrade? Do I try to use all the water out of the 75 to avoid the new tank cycling? I was told by someone to NOT use the existing bottom, is that true? I am pretty much doubling my water volume and not sure the best way to go about this without killing or stressing my tank out. Thanks in advance!!
tahitian butterflyfish
Hello!
Can anyone tell me if they have kept a tahitian with other butterfly fish?
I think they would be neat and would like to add them to my shopping cart. Already in my shopping cart is the
Banded Butterfly
Pearlscale
Sunset
Latticed
Maybe the double saddle butterfly,
I have a 125 gal tank with just two clown fish and a dwarf angle.
Thanks!

GFO/Carbon Reactor Benefits?
Since my tank is being restarted I thought I may add a BRS duel GFO/Carbon reactor to my sump system.
I have heard that they are beneficial, and that they aren't really a necessity for a new tank.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Would it benefit my tank to run this from the start?

Unhappy zoa
So I have some Zoas that r really not happy. They have been closed for months. We tried moving them, nothing. We change the water regularly, nothing. We even changed the water flow, nothing. We can't do a dip cuz they r now glued on a rock. We got two emerald crabs to help keep things clean, nothing. Why r they so unhappy.
Help, Bacteria bloom in new saltwater mix?
Made a batch of saltwater on friday. Cleaned my 32 gallon can with vinegar and filled it up like normal. Put in heater and a 3100 rio to mix salt. Now this morning it has what looks like bacteria or something on the surface! It's also on the heater, cords and rio. Some on the sides of the container also. Did the water start to cycle in 3 days? The temp is hot, heater might be shot. It was at 87 this morning. Have the lid off and it's cooling but I am thinking the whole batch is shot. So before I dump it, anyone have any thoughts?

Water boil and RODI
My lovely city has gone on a water boil for the third time in the last ten months. They are now using multiple types of chemicals to make the water safe to drink from different bacteria like ecoli. My question is if my Tds meter says 0 does it account for chlorine and any other chemicals that are getting put in or do I have to check for each individually?
Second is there anything beneficial to the aquarium that comes through tap water that may not be in dostilled? This may be a dumb question but I know that Floride is in our tap water and I am not sure if the RODI even takes that out. But as I have not had any algae in my tank since the cycle by using RODI I want to make sure I cover all of my bases:)

A peaceful Sunday
Good morning TRt friends, and welcome to Sunday! A nice quiet start to our holiday weekend. Dippy eggs and toast, rye, and white, to go with our pink milk and coffee. Can't seem to nail down the weather guessers for our weather forecast? Looking a smidge cooler, perhaps 80, and partly cloudy. and 70's tomorrow with chance of thunder storms. So looking like we'll be being real flexible with our grilling schedule this weekend. Have our 'family day' at church today, our 'pot luck' fellowship, that Jen and I head up.....so after a bit of a hectic start, we'll be back home relaxing. Hope all are well, and all the best to Y'all,

Raising specific gravity
Hey everyone. I'm new around this forum, but I signed up with the sole purpose of asking a question, but with all the knowledge available here I plan on sticking around.
I have a 29 gallon biocube that I'm getting ready to be a reef tank. I've got 27 lbs of dry rock in it now, as well as 4 blue damsels to help the tank with cycling. I'll be adding live rock when my local store gets some in.
My question is how do I go about raising the specific gravity from 1.022 to 1.024? I've seen answers all over the place with different methods, but I figured asking here would help me with my specific tank and my specific amount I need to change.
Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help.

29 Gallon BioCube
It's brand new, but I've got 20 pounds of Live sand, and 27 pounds of dry rock in it at the moment, along with 4 Damsels to help the tank cycling.
I have plans of putting live rock in, but just waiting on my local store to get some in.
I've looked into some of the things people have done with their biocubes, but have made no leaps myself to change anything just yet with mine. A protein skimmer is in the works, but that might be as much as I can handle.

Hey there.
I'm fairly new to the saltwater game, and I want to be able to do it correctly, so I figured having a resource such as this forum at my side would be helpful if I had questions.
I've literally just set up my 29 Gallon BioCube in the past few days and just finished putting some rocks in it tonight. I'm still cycling it, but have big plans (well, big small tank plans at least.)
In the past I've had another fish-only 29 gallon saltwater tank as well as a 55 Gallon Freshwater tank that I kept a few larger fish in for a while. I had a Silver Arrowana and a Redtail cat that I really enjoyed keeping, but when they got too large I had to relocate them, and decided it was best I got rid of the tank.

PAR calculator for EcoTech Radion
Didn't see this elsewhere. Found a great PAR to depth calculator for the EcoTech Radion LED lights. Select the model and lens and % of the six color variables and brightness. As you move the slider for the colors and brightness the display shows the PAR values at depths up to 36". You can also move the distance from water surface to see the coverage in the tank.
Interesting I'm not allowed to post a link. Too bad a really good tool for anyone using EcoTech Radion LED lights.

hello everyone i was just browsing around and saw marine pure bricks and i thought i would try them but ... i was wondering if i add these will they drop my nutrient levels to fast and kill my coral because i have heard horror stories of it and i have heard great stories out of it so i don't know what to do

Fluval lights for new 70 gal. Reef project.
Starting a new tank. It's 70 gal. 48"Wx18"Lx20"D and I plan on getting the fluval marine and reef full spectrum LED 46" lights for it. My question is, one or two? Would two make any difference, and what if I used one of those and a fluval aquasky LED together? I need some opinions on if this is enough for medium to high light requiring corals.
Salt
I have been meaning to ask given that I have fresh and salt tanks in the house. In a fresh tank in the past I have added aquarium salt purchased at the chain stores. They are clear crystals etc.
What is the difference between that and stuff like Instant Ocean etc ?? Can IO be substituted ?

New to saltwater tanks
Hello everyone, I'm new to the hobby and have a few questions as far as cycling my new 14g biocube tank. I've been cycling my tank for 5 days now and have been checking my salinity and doing my best to keep in the safe zone. I tested my water last night for the first time with the API reef master kit, and got 0ppm for phosphate, 0ppm for nitrate, 380ppm for calcium but im sure i screwed that one up and need to retest and lastly 11 drops of carbonate hardness at 196.9 ppm. I know myphospate and nitrate levels are good but i think my calcium is a little low and i don't know what my parameter for KH should be? Any tips for a newbie? Thanks
Saturday!
Good morning TRT friends, and.....HAPPY SATURDAY! It will be a picture perfect summer weekend at the South Jersey Shore......pert near 90 today, dropping to 80 by *onday, an all sunshine. As anytime when it gets this warm there's always the chance for a pop up shower. LET THE GRILLING and FUNNING BEGIN! Jen was up all night with a cake order, and kids called it quits about 3:30 this morning. But 'She loves me'.......instead of a nasty alarm, Mrs. H. brought me coffee in bed and a smooch for my wake up call. Hope all are well, and have trouble deciding which fun thing to get started with.:blob:..all the best,

Skimmer recommendations for 60 gallon!
I need to purchase a new protein skimmer. I need a hang on skimmer from the back of the tank. The current skimmer likes to overflow the collection dish and soak the living room carpet.
Anything has to be better than the Coralife super skimmer. But here's my current skimmer that I want to improve upon: http://ift.tt/1WrH9wP

solved my algae problem
This is not my first rodeo, so I tried everything to get rid of my hair algae!!!!
I do mean everything. Then when I added more snails 99% of them would die. I was almost literally pulling my hair out!!!!
It ended up being the salt mix.
I was using old salt mix. Bags were still sealed but a little clumpy and seemed a bit damp when I opened a bag. They had been sitting sealed in a box for 8 years??????
Anyhow, SG was right, temp was right, just could not figure it out. Since it was the first time I had used Tech M I chalked it up to the Tech M killing snails.
So I ordered a massive amount of snails.....a few days before this I did some massive water changes so much that there should not have been any Tech M in the system.
After placing the snails in the tank, they fell off the glass and it looked like it was curtains for the snails.
So I was like, this cannot be Fing happening. I went to PETCO and got a bucket of IO.
Did a massive water change and about 1/3 of the snails lived.
Now I have been on 2000ml of water change a day, and about a month later I have about 25% of the hair algae I had before. So I am winning the battle.
I am just flabbergasted as this is salt I have never had a problem with. Absolutely never!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best **** salt I had ever tried. So I will have to get in touch with the manufacturer and see what they have to say about salt chemistry changing after sitting that long.

Cold Water tank?
Hey guys long time no see.
So quick questions...
After migrating everything to my 90 gallon tank almost a year ago my girlfriend and i are now debating setting up the 30 gallon again..
I have just a couple questions that random google searching seems to not be able to answer..
Is there a size limitation to a cold water reef tank? I really like some of the things that are in cold water tanks and think this could potentially be awesome. I was talking with someone who said a 30 would be really hard to keep cool..which to me seems counter intuitive as it is less water to keep cool once it is cool..
If no size limitations....
Is 30 sufficient? How does one even go about setting up a cold tank?

Dusky Wrasse Question
The dusky wrasse is just one of those love at first sight fish for me. I havn't seen one in person, however my LFS is on the lookout for me. i have got the right size tank, and I have built my tank around getting this fish with the DSB (even though I have some feather dusters which apparently may become a snack for the fish) of Bimini pink sand and an open rockwork.
My question for those of you who are familiar with the fish or perhaps have one yourself is why on liveaquaria it is labeled as difficult. I am not a complete beginner, I have around 3 years total reefing experience, however I am just cautious.
Here is a link to my tank specs for reference.

Hello,
Can someone please tell me what in the world is growing on my snail shell?! I haven't been able to match it with anything from the searches I've done.
I'm trying to load a photo and it keeps telling me not a valid image file... its a jpg file..

Really Bad Days on Bubba's Reef
I have had a really bad couple of days. I lost 5 fish in 48hours.
My tanks has been up about 4 months now and has been doing really great.
I have been having recent issues with 40ppm Nirates for the past 3 weeks so I have been doing weekly 30% water changes plus bottom cleanings bringing it back down to the 10-15ppm range each week. All my other water chems are perfect except PH keeps dropping into the 8.0-7.9 range during each week between water changes. Afterwards the water change its around 8.2.
I recently decided to change out 50% of my bio balls with Seachem's Matrix to help improve my bio filter capacity. My remaining bio-balls were doing the bulk of the filtering. The ones I replaced with matrix were newer and showed no bio-filtering slim on them at all.
I tested my water chems today (Friday) and all my chems were good except for 15-20ppm nitrates and ph at 7.88. Plan to do another 30% water change Saturday.
I have lost my pink anthias, two clown fish, a red ruby, and a horse face blemmy in the past three days. My other fish a yellow tang, 3 blue chromis and one blue damsel plus a six line wrasse are all doing fine for now.
I see no sign of diseases or stress on any of my fish. One minute they are fine the next morning I find them floating in the corner!!
All my corals are doing fine except I had a tentacle plate that was great yesterday and now it looks like it was run over by a bus.....
Really don't thing the 20ppm Nirate levels are causing this but can't find anything else to blame right now.
Looking for ideas and advice.
Regards,
Tim

Copperband Butterfly bothering Open Brain
Hi everyone.
So I've been keeping a copperband Butterfly successfully for about 10 weeks now. About 4 weeks ago I added a fairly small green open brain coral. At the widest point it's probably 3 inches.
My butterfly never pays any attention to the open brain until it's the weekly coral feed. I feed all my LPS corals with a brine shrimp and mysis shrimp mix. I've currently got the open brain, a torch, a hammerhead, a frogspawn and a trumpet coral (there's some softies but I don't feed theme anything). The anemone also gets its feed at the same time too.
The copperband always comes along and steals all the food I give to the open brain. In addition, he pecks at the fleshy poly. I think he pecks because he wants the polyp to retract to reveal the shrimp - I've gotta give it to him for ingenuity! Could anyone suggest a way to stop him from bothering my open brain?
I've tried to watch over him before to frighten him off but he gets wise to the fact that I won't hurt him and carries on anyway! Thanks in advance.

Flame Angel - Diver's Den - FS or Trade
I am looking to sell my flame angel or trade for frags. It is very healthy and eating well. The only reason I am getting rid of it is because I saw it nip a few times at some new SPS in the tank and I like the coral more than the fish... He may be OK long term, I just pulled him because the coral was new to the tank and still acclimating. Now that he is out and I have redone my aquascape, I don't want to risk it. I paid $100 from Live Aquaria Diver's Den.
I am looking to get half what I paid, $50.
Pic Attached.
I am in Niles, MI. Pickup only.

Diamond Goby F/S
Selling an X-Large Diamond Goby minimum 5" long for $20. It's healthy, a great sifter and ready for pick up. Thank you.
Can't ID this little thing..
I just started my first tank almost 2 weeks ago. I've got 3 feather duster worms (that are growing noticeably every day!), a couple stomatella snails, and this just showed up last night. It's very small, only a couple millimeters wide. It moves around very slow. Kind of a blue-ish gray center, and white on the edges. I know the pictures are garbage, but hopefully they're OK enough to ID!
Hello Thursday!
Top of the morning TRT friends, and.....HAPPY THURSDAY! Another beautiful day on tap around here......Sunshine, and mid 80's. Ahhhhhh summer! 29 gallon build
Started a 29 gallon with a homemade 10 gallon sump about a week ago. I am using 20 lbs of live sand as well as 6 lbs of live rock and 40 lbs of dry rock. The sump is just being used for storage of the protein skimmer and heater. I have two powerheads (azoo 317gph and Super Aqua 158gph) one reflecting off the front glass and the other off the back glass. Also using a Fluval marine and coral LED light. I am fairly crafty so most of my projects are diy just to prepare everyone!
So far i haven't seen any spikes in the nitrates or nitrites while the ammonia has a reading but not high. It has only been a week so is this normal? With the two powerheads and the overflow to the sump do i have enough circulation? Should i add another powerhead? I did have a sudden coralline algae bloom but i have read its nothing to be concerned with. I am new to saltwater but have had freshwater tanks for 5 years. I am open to any information regarding the hobby. :) :fish: Will continue to post pictures as i continue through the process.

Disaster Thread
Well three weeks after making my dream come true and purchasing a 90 gallon saltwater tank. I lost my tank.
I was removing some plumbing tonight to relocate my return pump in an attempt to rid my tank of micro bubbles and CRASH.
My tank completely cracked down the middle horizontally on the bottom. All I could do is stand and watch as 90 gallons poured into my basement carpet. Ugh.
I am still not sure what caused the tank to crack in such a way, but I am assuming I twisted the bulkhead in just the right way in effort to remove it.
Luckily I was able to save my live rock and fish and store them at my LFS. I am unbelievably down emotionally.
We called the insurance company and a clean up company (coming in the morning). The insurance company will cover any water damage through homeowners insurance after we pay $1000.00 deductible. But won't cover the tank (figured). My LFS guy is contacting marineland for me to see what they can do, he swears the tank shouldn't have cracked so easily.
Either way I figure I will be out the money for a replacement tank and most likely basement carpet.
Well that was my evening, I will post more as i have updates.

Flow rate for 90gallon tank
So I know I'll get a lot of different opinions here...but just trying to get a guide line for recommend turnover rate for a lps/soft coral tank.
Situation: 90 gallon tank the tank is 36 long and 24 wide and 24 tall...pretty good amount of live rock I would say...not sure how much in lbs of live rock...but probably a tad more than most. I bought 2 1200gph voyager Sicce powerheads...thinking that's about 30X flow rate. I also have a wave surfer there connected to as well. I also have a 951 sicce 4.0 return pump as well. I was wondering for keeping lps and soft corals if this is too much? Again...lets keep in mind the tank is taller. I only have my rock stacked about 14-16" tall as well. So there is quite a bit of open field up there as well. I guess I'm more worried its too much flow?? Thanks guys for the inputs in advance.

Refugium Display Tank Help
I decided that I wan to convert my FOWLR tank to a macro algae display tank. In the future I may want to try my hand at seahorses or pipe fish, but for now I just want to know the best way to start the conversion.
The tank is 75 gallons and has been up and running for a few years. I'm going to rehouse all the current livestock and begin fresh. I have about an inch of new sand (6 months) in the tank currently.
1) Should I just add a couple more inches of sand on top of the current sand bed?
2) Should I add "miracle mud" or something similar? I've read conflicting pieces on what is best for the macro algae that would be planted in the sand bed.
3) Lastly....for now, what is the best maintenance for a deeper sand bed? I'm used to siphoning every few days. Should you do that with a deeper sand bed? Would this export nutrients that the macro algae needs?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Ich or Blue Velvet
I'm having a hard time telling if my purple tang has ich or blue velvet, whatever it is is killing my fish in less than a week of onsite so let's talk treatment options.
Skimmer pump
Ok so I have the 48" tall lifereef skimmer operating off of a mag 24. I am thinking of changing the pump out to s jebao dct 15000 which is a 4000 gph pump. The mag draws 265 watts while the jebao draws 105 and gives an extra 1600 gph of flow. Allegedly the venturi operates better with pumps that have big balls. Anyway the electric cost would be cut in half for that one pump, but would take about 15 months to pay for itself.
My question is who runs lifereef and can you really see performance gains with larger pumps? Would the extra 1600 gph be worth it?

Our new hobby!
Hello everyone! My girlfriend and I recently decided to take on ANOTHER hobby and started a saltwater tank together. We both love diving and I think that's what intrigued us so much about having a tank. We picked up a 24gal JBJ nano cube about a month ago for a great price. A week and a half ago, we finally set everything up. About 20lbs of live rock and live sand went into the tank. Our LFS suggested we take everything out of the back compartments except for the sponges (3 of them: 2 on the left side and 1 in the middle.) My first question is, is that the correct way to start a tank?
So we've been cycling the tank now for about about a week and a half. My friend suggested I add in a pinch of fish food once a day to help build up ammonia, so I've been doing that for the last 5 days. He also told me to put in 1 small shrimp, so I took one of his frozen feeder krill and put it in the tank to decompose.
Here are my current water readings. Again, this is only a week and a half in but I'm just curious if we are on the right path to creating a healthy tank. I'm using the API kit, and the readings are a bit odd to me:
pH 8.2-8.4
ammonia is slowly climbing to just over 0, but not quite 0.25ppm
Nitrites are 0ppm
Nitrates are 0ppm
In the last couple days we've experienced the expected diatom takeover on our sand and some on our rocks. This was expected, and we are under the impression that it should go away in a week or 2. We have a few feather duster worms that seem to be growing very well which was surprising. Also a couple stomatella snails, which I actually haven't seen in a little over 24 hours now.
We're excited to create our own underwater haven, but we want to be sure we are doing everything correct before we introduce any life.

Any idea what this is?
So as of this weekend, I added my CUC and my tank has officially cycled. Now, I saw what looked like a small Starfish, but with really thin legs. He disappeared, but now I have a bunch of these little legs or whatever coming out of a piece of my live rock!
Any idea what this hitch hiker is?

Newbie Needs Advice
Hi all, I'm still a very green reef keeper and need some advice on adding chemicals to change my water parameters. Are you dumping them straight into your tank or premixing them in salt or fresh water? Earlier tonight i was doing a 10% water change and discovered that my pH was low (it has been this past week as i have been raising it). I added a little more chemical straight into the tank and a few moments later noticed that my Skunk Cleaner Shrimp was flopping on its side. I'm assuming he inhaled a concentrated mix of chemicals or something as he has been totally fine earlier today. He's clinging to life right now but hopefully he'll pull through. Any advice on this topic so i can avoid an incident like this again would be much appreciated...
Upgrade Issue
Im upgrading from a 75g to a 180g this weekend. The new tank is going in the same spot as the old tank. im using the same sump from the 75, also using powerheads and heaters and such. I dont have the luxury of setting up the new tank, letting everything settle and then transfer the livestock over. Im going to be putting livestock in rubbermaid containers while we move the old tank and set up the new one. My question is about the sandbed. My current tank has 1 1/2 - 2 inches of caribbsea aragonite, i didnt rinse it when i initially set up the tank, have vacuumed it a bunch and have had no issues with it. Most people have told me to just get rid of the old sand and replace it all together. Getting dry sand at this point is probably out of the question because i dont know anybody that carries it and if i order online, it wont be here before the weekend. So i will probably just buy the same live sand that i bought before. Alot of people say to rinse it, but if i rinse it, wont it kill all the living bacteria thats in it. I know it will help eliminate some cloudiness, but i can be careful filling the tank, as i was with the 75 and avoid a lot of that. if the sand is rinsed and all living stuff dies, wouldnt that cause a massive ammonia spike. being that i will have to put my livestock back in the tank after its set up, i cant have that. wouldnt it be better to not rinse the sand and have less die off. I have about 120 pounds of LR from my 75 that will be in the 180 and im using the 75 gallons or so of water from that tank to put in my new tank. in hopes of having a good amount of initial bacteria to eliminate the tank cycling again. Please give thoughts and recommendations as i am carefully trying to plan this out before i begin. The next few days are crammed with stuff i need to do to get ready. Im excited, but nervous. this is my first upgrade/transfer. Thank you in advance for your help
Zeomag
Ok so my LCR2 reactor is running balanced at 6.78-6.79. The controller doesn't ever have to operate it even though its programmed to do so. I run zeomag mixed in with the TLF Reborn. Tested my levels today, calcium was 423, alk was 10.3, and mag was 1065.
Any of you guys use zeomag? is my ph not low enough for it? its perfect for the TLF Reborn.
I bumped the ph down today and it has been rock solid at 6.57 for the past 12hrs. Last time I ran it that low I was getting too high on the calcium.

Don't know what's on live rock? Help?!
I had my 30g reef tank, for roughly 8 months. I'm not sure if it's a small feather worm or a small aiptasia. Please help me!
New APEX
Man, 6 months ago I switched from DA to neptune thinking I was getting the latest/greatest controller on the market.... well I guess not. Its now replaced with something better. I don't know how I really feel about the new base unit though. It appears to not support the display?? I already have salinity and one link. So I do not see what I would gain other than having the "latest" with a better processor etc.
What do my fellow apex users think?:poke:

Watchmen Goby,cloudy eyes. Help!!!
Hello,i have a concern about my fish tank and fish. My tank has been up and running with livestock for a couple months now, everyone seemed to be doing great. Everyone was eating and playing and our goby was a sifting maniac. Then about a week ago we lost our clownfish. I have done 2 water changes since setting it up,its only a thirty gallon. Now ive been trying to do water changes once every 2 weeks, but i havent done one now in a few. So i did a water cahnge the other day, All the parameters were fine, again had it double tested once by me and once my my lfs where we got the fish. Everything was fine, but after my water change my watchman goby seemed sick, lost almost all his color and both eyes were kind of clouded over,he was swimming funny and at one point was laying sideways on the sand band. We thought we were losing him :(. But then today whan i turned on the lights and fed the fish,he looked quite a bit better had more color and only one eye was clouded the other is fine. He even came out to eat. Now im just wondering was this stress related form the water change after not having one in a few weeks? Or is this an infection? And a couple of my fish do seem to have a couple white spots on them, didnt notice that until yesterday. Maybe ich?? I have no idea at this point, please help!
New to reefing and need help
Hi Everyone,
So I have decided to finally do my dream and own a saltwater tank. I bought a used 65 gallon Red Sea Reefer and got a great deal. However it was severally negelected and the previous owner had way to many fish (Sailfine Tang, Blue Tang,Yellow Tang, 2 Clowns and many others). So needless to say I gave some of the fish away to friends to make room and help heal the tank. My issue is this the rocks are soaked in Phosphate and nitrates and I want to do a reef tank. So I bought a Phosphate remover that is in a bag I place in the filter socks. I also bought a brand new cleaner crew and did a 60 percent water changes. So I am now worried about phosphates and ntirates and I have been feed the remaining fish the pellets that where given to me however the fish are not interested and they either sink or get sucked up into the overflow box. Should I shut off the Sump? Should I stop feeding them pellets and feed them mysis shrimp? Should I try saving the live rock and buy calcium reactor? I just need some help Lol :help: Thanks ahead of time everyone.

HAPPPY BIRTHDAY TOOOOOO YOUUUU!!!
Good morning Tuesday!
Good morning TRT friends, and.....HAPPY TUESDAY! Perhaps sun, with perhaps thunderstorms.....Yeah, I'd last long at my job if I tried to pull that. Looks like a scrambled egg sandwiches morning, and fresh coffee and pink milk to get us out the door....or onto the beach if'n we were Jeff.:) Yeah Helen, that movie put the fear of God in a lot of folks....that was a tough scene. The pace has quickened at the boatyard as expected with Memorial Day approaching. Folks that can't be bothered returning calls are now all of a sudden buddy buddy, and can I have my boat for the weekend? Hope all are doing good, and all the best,

Question about Tangs
i currently have a 75 gallon and am about to upgrade to a 180 gallon. my livestock is as follows.
bristletooth tomini tang- about 4 inches long
coral beauty
2 occ clowns
scooter blenny
1 firefish
1 scarlet cleaner shrimp
3 peppermint shrimp
1 sexy shrimp
a few hermit crabs and various snails of multiple varieties
3 colonies of Zoas
long polyp leather coral
green sinulara
Frogspawn
palm cloves
green mushrooms
My question is, i know i want another tang along with a few anthias when i make the switch to the 180. I was thinking about adding the tang very soon after making the switch, like within the first week, in hopes of keeping peace between the other tang i currently have. And then adding the anthias a couple weeks later. Does this sound like the way to go or is there a better way?

Bar (Zebra) Gobies Sleeping
I have two bar gobies and they are some of my favorite fish- they are so cute! They always come to the glass when I walk by and they are always laying/ sleeping next to each other. My question is- they tend to lay/sleep ALOT lol. Is that normal?
6 Line Wrasse Bullying New Dartfish
My 65 gal tank is about six months old, and I've had a 6 line wrasse for about 2 months. Last Saturday I bought a purple dartfish, who was being mildly harassed by the wrasse - not attacked or bitten, but "chased away". The dartfish has gone into a crevice in the rock and hasn't come out. I also bought a yellow tang that has adjusted with no problem.
I've spot fed some food into the dartfish's hiding place, but of course have no way of knowing if it's getting the food. Should I wait? Will it die?
I'm learning. Anytime I hear "well, it might be aggressive" or it "might" nip at your corals, or it "might" eat your shrimp...well that's code-speak for it WILL. LOL. At least that's been my luck.
Does anyone have suggestions to acclimate the fish to the tank? Or do I have to make a choice of which one I want to keep (because I'll take out the cheaper one LOL).
Thanks
Leigh

Baffle fell down, how to fix
woke up the morning to a "thunk-thunk-thunk" from the fishroom. the baffle in the sump had fallen, leavng the skimmer pump exposed. My sump was built for me out of a 55 tank. I had assumed the baffle was glass, because I learned from TRT :) that silicone does not attach acrylic to glass. well, It's acrylic. I can take the old baffle to the glass shop and have them make me a new piece. please tell me that there is a silicone sealant that works underwater? Or do I have to drain and dry the whole thing. or perhaps there is another solution? like a marine sealant for boats?
Hey guys!! General help needed for first tank!
Ok so I'm moving from fresh to salt water. And I have local help with friend but they recommend asking you guys for certain help! I'm starting a 110gal tank, my main confusion is a refugium vs no refugium. I'm making a custom sump, I was gonna have it flow from in sump skimmer through bafflesome, then falk through a filter media into live rock, then through the next baffles into the heated pump area. So first question is this an adequate setup, 2nd this may sound dumb, but difference between reef and live rock??. Sorry if it sounds dumb but I'm just starting. Oh and I see alot of abbreviations use in chat, if u use one could you tell me what it means once so I know lolol
Hey all!
I'm josh! Just starting my first salt system, will be 110gal reef setup! Total beginner with some help so I'll be asking alot at first! Sorry lol

Help with my multilayered aquarium project
I was interested in building a tank that was 4 feet wide, 4 feet long, and 6-7 feet tall. Here's the catch, as I am mostly interested in fish like sharks and other fish that care more about horizontal space than height, I am on a sort of personal project to construct a tank that hosts three layers with the previous specs. Three, INTERCONNECTED layers. Now, I have some ideas as to how I'll actually build the thing and how to pump the thing, but I'm wondering if anyone has done something like this before? And I am somewhat worried about how a protein skimmer would work out with such a tank, though I'm sure it could be made to work somehow.
I plan to host a comet (marine betta), harelquin tuskfish, 2-3 catsharks, and a panther grouper, and a moray eel or two. My cleanup crew will be abalones, tiger cowries, chocolate chip stars, and perhaps some of those extremely cheap snails/hermits every couple months (as they are definitely going to be consumed.
What are some complications you guys can think of for such a tank?

Upgrading Tank Questions
i will be upgrading from a 75g to a 180g in the next couple weeks. I picked up the tank used and have pieced together the rest of the equipment that i need, but i have a few questions.
1. i currently have 1 1/2 - 2 inch sand bed in my 75. its about 16 months old and gets vacuumed when i do water changes. (there was about 6 months were i didnt vacuum it) Im looking to do the same depth sandbed in my new tank and wanted to know if i should just replace all the sand, or add to existing sand to make up the difference. If i add to it, im sure i can get away with not using live sand. Thoughts?
2. I currently have about 120 pounds of LR that has been in my tank since the beginning. I may add a couple pieces, but dont plan on adding much rock at all. In using that much establish LR, even if i replace the sand bed, will my tank still go through all the initial cycle uglies?
3. I plan on using about 100-120 gallons of water that has been in my system for a couple days at least, and the rest will be new water. Any issues with this. would using this much "current" water, help prevent new tank cycling?

26 inch deep tank
Hey I was wondering what would be best to light a 26 inch tank that I just got. I'm having trouble finding the best way to light it and have the best par and light penetration/spread. The tank is 73 inches long so whatever light it would be would need to be purchased in double. What do you guys use or suggest? I'm really leaning towards/wanting LEDs as I like the one I currently have on my 30 gallon.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Hola! Newbie here!
Hello all! I am in Canal Fulton OH! Go Buckeyes!
I just stepped up to my first salt water tank. It's. 90 gallon that I plan to make into a reef.
My love for fish tanks has always been there but I never noticed how serious it was until we built a 20 gallon freshwater tank in our house for our little guy. In doing this I noticed that the fish tanks at the LFS had a great ability to calm down my PTSD (military vet). Now here we are. I finally have my dream tank started in my office in the basement.
I will post a picture and the details about my build. Regards!

I am two time zones from many of you, and pathetically first again.

Looking for a Leopard Catshark
I've been interested in getting one of these for a long time, but I have no idea where I can get one.
Note: I am NOT searching for a leopard shark, which grows to 8 feet, but a leopard catshark, which grows just above three feet. The latter can actually be kept in a tank below 1000 gallons, the former would want something about the size of a 3 car garage.

Multi Coloured Urchin Reef Safe???
Hi Guys, I was just at the LFS today and they had a "multi coloured urchin". I'm finding little to no information on him but he looks very similar to a tuxedo urchin but more brightly coloured (same coloured bands as a tuxedo). I do have a reef tank with small fish and inverts as well and need to know if he would be a good addition. Pros, cons or any advice would be appreciated!!
Emergency tank drilling advice needed
I tried drilling my 40 breeder today and failed kinda. Everything appeared fine but once we set it back up, I noticed a hairline crack below one of the holes I drilled that was very slowly leaking water. I disassembled and am going to buy a new tank tomorrow.
Me methodology was as follows:
Apply virtually no pressure on the drill, let the bit do the work.
Set the chuck very lightly so it wouldn't bind up, it did not bind at all.
Had water running on it the entire time.
Water was only running from the top where I was drilling from. I am wondering if I should have had water running on the underside of the cut as well?
I'm going to try again tomorrow I think, or see if I can pay someone locally to do it. Any idea where I went wrong?
The bit seems to have had a slight wobble to it that I could not fix. Could this be it?
Thanks in advance

Snail not moving?
Hey guys...so I have had my snails for a couple of months now...I got a turbo snail and another little guy that just kinda stopped moving...and really showing any signs of life. If you poke him he moves and stuff...I was wondering what there "signs of dying are"? It was on the glass and he started to sort of take his underside and curl it inside his body...just curious was all.
Newbie wondering if I can use these as base rock?
hi first time poster but I've been lurking awhile, I have about 10kg of coral that I think is man made or looks it anyway I have no idea what material
It's made off but it's been in a fresh water tank.
Could I use it as a base rock and seed it with some live rock? From what I've read anything in the tank will turn "live" with enough time or am I mistaken?
Ild send a photo but I have no idea how anyway sorry for the noob questions

Puffer and shrimp
I have a coral banded shrimp and would like to get a puffer. Has anyone had any experience with them?
I do have another tank I could move the shrimp to, but there is already a blood shrimp in there.
Any thoughts?

Hi everyone. I do hope I am writing this in the right place. I am only a newbie of salt for 2 months and a newbie to this forum for 2 minutes. If I need to move this, please let me know. Any who.. we have decided to finally dive into the world of salt after many years of tossing and turning. We got started with a 29 gallon bio-cube with all the stock lighting. The shop we got it from tested our water weekly and we added turbo snails and crabs after the first week and the second week a bicolor blenny, 3 coral and a RBA. To try and keep this short, after about another 2 weeks, everything still tested good so we added a standard clown, a hippo tang, bangai cardinal and a mandarin. The bangai died in 2 days. Never saw him eat and he was small. We were told though he was tank raised and eating at the store. The hippo got ick and 3 weeks later still have it, despite the garlic infused seaweed, ick food and even brine that we feed the RBA. She eats like a pig so we are told she will eventually snap out of it but it's common. The bicolor blenny died from the ick. Stopped eating. No hope. Everyone else seemed happy. A week later the mandarin died out of no where. We have copepods in the tank as you can see them on the glass and he was pigging out on brine as well. No signs of ick. Mystery to us. We have been testing our water and even having the store test it all during this process. Everything is testing fine. We were told to get a cleaner shrimp as a tool to help. He died in less then 2 days. The clown is now covered in ick as the hippo still is not cured. I have no idea what is going on or what to do.. everytime I go back to the store I get NEW information. Example: My fish still have ick 3 weeks later yet eating well.. how long does this take? Store: What's your tank temp? Me: Huh? I donno. You never mentioned temp. Store: Oh no.. that's critical. You need to be under 80 for your reef tank. Hours later.. I call. We are at 81-82 in the morning and 83-84 at night. Store: Oh that's to high. Here's your shrimp. Me: Will he be OK? Store: Yup, just acclimate for an hour. DEAD!
So here are the specs:
Water temp: 81-84
Lightings: Blue fan 10 hours, white light 6 hours
Nitrates: 10 or less
Phosphate: 0
Salinity: 1.022
This is all we have been told to monitor and even the temp we just started doing the past 3 days.
I'm getting very frustrated. The ick I understand why somethings happened but shouldn't it be gone by now? The shrimp? The mandarin?
Luckily, the coral is growing great, I can see lots of new growth and the RBA also seems to be doing great. Any advise is welcome as I'm starting to question the store. I trust them.. but feel the important information is being trickle fed to us or I go online and read stuff then question them.
Thanks in advance and I apologize this was so long

210 gallon Agressive/Predator Marine Tank
I am new to the aquarium hobby, having been wanting and researching for about 2 years. I have read 3 or 4 books and done a ton of online research and have finally decided on 210 gallon (really nice) setup- and am for now leaving it up to the LFS to tell me what components I need for the system.
These questions are about compatibility and the size and order of fish I'd like to add to the tank. I am not skimping on parts- especially the skimmer. I intend to do weekly water changes of 7-10% per week and intend to keep the bioload high, but manageable. I'd like to have about 7 fish in the tank.
Here is the livestock in order of importance:
Porcupine Puffer (my favorite)
Volitan Lionfish
Eel (of some kind, suggestions welcome)
Dogface or Foxface puffer
Panther Grouper
Other suggestions welcome, but here's the catch: I know these fish are not reef safe, but my understanding is that they will eat the cleanup crew, but may or may not bother the coral. I love triggers but am avoiding them here (along with angelfish) as I plan to try to put in some coral. I feel like they might mess with some types of corals but not with others, and if I can figure out which ones they don't mess with, I could get some serious coral color in the tank along with the fish.
I realize that my fish list is incomplete and also that 7 fish is probably a lot for a 210 gallon. I also realize that theoretically this should be a FOWLR tank, but I'm interested in your opinions- if I avoid the triggers and the others that will definitely destroy the coral and I don't put in any inverts, could I have a predator reef tank with these fish?
What other awesome fish could I add?
What order should I add them?
Am I crazy to put coral in with these fish?

CPR bak-pak 2 modification
I have Cpr bakpak 2 protein skimmer (for 37 gallon tank) and the pump keep falling down. I put my tank on my main tank and ruin my floor when my pump fell down. I had it so I want to put on the back of my tank (i have 20 gallon nano tank). My plan is that getting new pump on the bottom of the tank and use an extension pvc pipe that connect between the new pump and the water intake pipe for skimming. So any recommendation that is strong enough for my plan?? My tank is 18 inches deep. Please help me I dont want to get new protein skimmer.

Anemones and...?
I have an anemone in my 125 with two clowns and a coral beauty. I would like to add more to it, but it appears that most fish will attack the anemone?
Can anyone tell me some good fish that would work well with an anemone?
PS I just put in two turbo snails. I read that some snails can eat anemones. Is this one of them?
Thanks!!

LFS Vandalized??!!
My wife saw this on facebook. Aquarium Center has been my fish store for 15 years now. They were just about to move to a new location. Sounds like the tanks got mercury poisoning!

Yellow Tang color washed out for 14 hours
Last night I noticed that my yellow tang's color was very washed out all over. He was acting completely normal but he was very pale looking. I was afraid that he had developed a bad case of ich but everyone else in the tank was normal otherwise he seemed fine. Water chems are all fine and I have not changed anything recently in my tank.
I thought maybe he was not getting enough seaweed to eat since I only give him one large piece a day in the morning. So I gave him a second piece last night which he eagerly accepted.
When the lights came on this morning he now looks perfectly normal and his color is bright yellow again.
Anyone every experienced anything like this before? I assume he is OK now but I'm going to keep up the double seaweed feeding to see if it helps.
Regards,
Tim

post tank crash
xHi all. have a 6 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot tank , with a 48x20x20i nches sump. had a bad crash the other week and killed of all corals, put my fish into the QT tank and did a complete water change tank and sump, followed by a 50 percent water change 2 days later, then 20 percent changes. now my amonia is zero, my nitrites are zero and my nitrates around 0.4.. but i have had a bloom of brown hair algae. i will be putting a yellow tang, a blue tang and a two barred rabbit fish back in... will they eat the algae??.. or will i need some specialist CUC to do the job...

Fly away Friday
Morning all.
Headed home to Colorado today for a couple of days.
The security lines are out of control long now, although the number of flights have not greatly increased. I will refrain from comment, as it might be political in nature. Glad to have Precheck and fastlane everything.
Can't wait until *onday to start my new project at work. Been in the minor leagues for four months and got called up into the spotlight.
Full on buffet with good coffee, beers and mimosas for fellow travelers. I do not recommend the travel diet for everyone.

Can inverts carry vermetid snails and aptasia
Been a while since I've been on here but I've got a question. An outbreak I couldn't get under control of vermetid snails and then followed by a huge aptasia infestation had me ready to hit the reset button. So I did and tonight I transferred the last fish from the old smaller DT to the new larger one....I have 2 hermits but more importantly a conch that we have grown quite fond of and of course the kids named it so I would like for it and the other inverts to make the move to. However I'm concerned they could carry something over on or in their shell. I've read they can not carry ich and fortunately I've not had to deal with that yet but I don't want to deal with vermetids again.
I got in hot and heavy and was buying corals left and right from shows, local stores, Craigslist etc and in my haste and impatience I gave myself a plague. Nope, didn't use a QT tank either which in hindsight could've prevented that.
Should I set up a small 1-2 gallon QT tank for them for 6-10 weeks or should I trust that they can't bring those issues with them...etc?
Thanks in advance!!

clown fish are fighting
hi i am new to this hobby and i have a concerning question about my clownfish, they are around the same size one is lighter in orange color and the other is darker orange, the lighter one i got on 5/10/2016 and the darker one i got on 5/15/2016. when the second clownfish was introduced to the tank they seem to be friendly to each other and swim together for a little but now they fight all the time to the point that the lighter one now hides behind the filter. today i just noticed while looking at them that the lighter one seems to be scarred on the mouth and has a small red streak across from what can be considered its lip. since i saw that i have now placed the lighter colored clown inside a breeder net , is there anything i can do to try and pair or help them or will i have to return one of them to the LFS? they are both around the same size and i got them 5 days apart from two different stores. :(
Hi everyone!
I'm from Portland, Oregon, and I'm a bioengineer who has been reading about aquatics for a looooong time. I've been setting up a FOWLR aquarium for some saltwater predatory fish, and I needed some advice so I came here as it seemed friendly enough ;P
That and I'm trying to find a place I can buy an epaulette shark for under $350 as I have a bit of distrust towards the online fish stores, and find their prices steep for an animal that probably suffered a lot to get to my home.

tubing question
For my dosing pump i need a very small tubing (roughly 2mm) and I saw this at home depot? Does anyone know if this would be reef safe?

Are there ever any good hitchikers?
I've been wondering whether any hitchikers actually turn out to be good for the aquarium. I mean, I'm sure that it happens occasionally, but I'm wondering how common that might be, and what types of species tend to be "good" hitchikers.
What clams could I keep with:
A panther grouper, bamboo shark, epaulette shark, harlequin tuskfish, and an eel (either snowflake, banded, or dragon eel).
I was thinking of a FOWLR tank, but I though that perhaps some clams could filter feed and help keep my tank clean, or just look pretty ;P

Looking for an Epaulette Shark
Preferably a small one as I wish to raise it myself. Online fish stores don't sell them cheaper than $350, and I find that a bit steep, especially considering what the shark has to go through.
Does anybody have some for or know a place to get them cheaper than $350 dollars?

Cleaner Crew for for Predatory FOWLR
I'm a big fan of aquariums run in large part by the occupants (don't worry, I don't skimp on filtration/protein skimmers), so I was trying to come up with a cleaner crew for a FOWLR tank with the following fish:
Bamboo or Marbled Cat Shark
Harlequin Tuskfish
Panther Grouper
Some type of eel. Probably snowflake or dragon eel, but this is flexible.
Potentially a volitans lionfish.
The tank size is probably going to be 400-500 gallons (though, that, too, can change).
What I'm particularly worried about are cleaners for this aquarium. At this point I've basically ruled out cleaner fish and crustaceans as they would just be a tasty snack for these guys. I am considering some cowries and conches as they seem heavily armored enough, and I am also considering some starfish (no sand sifter star though).
In short, I'd like some suggestions for glass cleaners, water filterers, sandsifters, and basically any other type of cleaner crew that won't be outright eaten, that won't destroy live sand/live rock, and won't harm the fish.
I apologize for the long post.

Tank upgrade questions
My brother in law wants to give me his 80 gallon with 30 gallon sump for free!! Way better than my 45 with no sump. It doesnt leak, pump works, nice stand, all the plumbing already done. I however would like to do the upgrade without killing anything or having to start all over. I'm 5 months in to this process and I really do not want to see it go belly up. The lights I have are good enough the new tank is the same length and height just twice as wide. So questions:
SPECS(Current)
45 gallon tank, aqua clear 110 filter (500g/hr, sponge, 3lbs of LR), Hydor 450 external canister (Bio balls), Aquatic Life Mini Skimmer, 50 lbs LR, Live sand substrate, 2x 650gph power heads, Fluval T5HO quadx39W. SPS frags x2, 1 mushroom and 1 paly. 1 Coral Beauty and 1 Ocellaris Clownfish, and clean up crew.
- I have 50 lbs of live rock, is that enough? I really don't want to buy more if I don't have too (SO EXPENSIVE):bawling:.
- Is there a specific process to changing over, I'm guessing it's like a really stressful water change?
- I know I will need a bigger protein skimmer, and more power heads, anything else?
- Use the old sand?
- Best suggestions for a sump setup? I don't know how many chambers it is.
- What else am I missing?

Hi there from Buckeye Country!
Hey guys! Im a big time hobbyist that has been running freshwater aquariums for years and now I'm dipping my toes into SW. I just started a 29 gallon using live rock and live sand. It's currently cycling but I am expecting to add fish maybe next week. I also have a 75g FW community tank. I'm new to the SW side so bare with my nagging questions over the next few months.
DC pumps not good with wavemaker?
I bought 2 sicce extreme variable E pumps, also bought a wave surfer controller from Sicce as well...apparently I was not aware that DC pumps were not meant to be on these style of wave surfer...does anyone know the main reason why? Is is mostly premature pump failure, thanks.
How to handle a bully
Ok so I love tangs! My powder blue however is such a bully. Everyone gets along mostly. From time to time he lets everyone know he's the boss. However when I add a new fish he goes crazy and constantly picks at them for a couple days. Today I added a flame angel and the powder blue stayed true to his habits. It is at the point that I worry about new additions making it. If they hang in there for a couple days he leaves them alone but it shouldn't be like that. For those of you with bullies, how do you deal with them?
I thought this powder blue might die when i got him. He looked awful and shortly thereafter got ich. He has recovered nicely. He looks awesome and has doubled in size in the past 5 months. I really don't want to get rid of him. He gets along with my naso, regal, and yellow tangs. It's just any NEW fish that is an issue.

Bubble Magus Dosing Pump
Does anyone use the Bubble Magus dosing pump? I just bought the BM-T11 dosing pump and in the process of setting it up I realized I didnt have enough tubing. The problem is that I cant find the size of the tube anywhere. I did see 2mm ID online but now i cant find that tubing size at a reasonable price.
I tried your standard airline hose already and its way to big. I did test and i am able to use a wire tie to tighten that hose up tight enough so it wont come off. Does anyone see a problem doing that? any suggestions would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Cleaning the tank
I'm currently three weeks into the first setting up cycle of the tank and have already added a raw shrimp, which has disappeared due to a small crab eating it, the crab somehow came with the live rock. There is a small starfish, yellowy green as well.
My questions:
1. Should I be siphoning the sand to clean it during the cycle or leave it dirty?
2. Should i clean the glass during this cycle as it has got a fair bit of green algae growing on it?
3. I have a small spidery character which has a body of about 4mm in length (pink), and has about 28 legs / tenticles in white. Should I get rid of this or leave it grow?
Your help is much appreciated.

CPR bak-pak2 protein skimmer
I have CPR bak pak 2 protein skimmer used. I still have the old pump from the original skimmer. But it keeps from falling down and it ruined my tank. Like last night, I have incident and ruin my whole bathroom and my living room because of the pump is falling down while I was school. Currently I put the skimmer on the main tank. So I decided to change it. So my plan is that to put the new pump on the bottom of the back of the tank and use attach the pvc pipe on the skimmer. The skimmer is for 40 gallon tank. What's the best pump that is strong enough to do according to my plan.
