Newbie light rig

I'm planning a 55g no sps and I don't like how the canopies look. Do they serve a purpose besides a place for the lights? Or if I find something that hangs from ceiling or clips on the tank is it the same? They are so common I want to make sure I'm not missing something.



Also, is it more expensive that way, or anything else I should know?
