Okay,
So since I last posted about converting my 60 gallon Malawi tank to a reef tank on a budget, Ive acquired pretty much everything I need (mostly secondhand)
I just want to run through a few things on my plan of action to see what peoples thoughts were.
I've acquired:
MCE600 HOB skimmer
Jaboa wp-25 wavemaker
Autoaqua Smart mini ato (digital one, not the float switch one
STC 1000 temperature sensor which I will wire a Aqueon pro 150w heater into.
My main Concern here is, I've had to really badger the missus to let me set this tank up as pride of place in the house and I REALLY REALLY cant let it end up in a mess like I have a habit of doing with my discus and Malawi tanks (don't get me wrong they are super healthy and breeding, I just don't keep up with weekly asthetic maintenance).
So that said I cannot have the tank swamped in hair algae! I need to start a regime that I intent to go on with from day one of the tank so algae doesn't get a foothold ever and my corals have everything they need :).
Obviously good cleaning/water changes/CUC have a part to play but what I wanted was peoples advice regarding a good 'chemical filtration/dosing plan' to use from day one.
My main source of rocks is homemade DIY rock, It is almost cured and down to the same pH as my tap water, I now intend to give it 3 more weeks in Ro/Di water. Since I used oyster shell as well as aragonite and crushed coral in this I fear Phosphates.
As my MCE600 has a filter medium compartment I was thinking of always having a sock of Rowa phos(or equivalent) and a sock of actibvated carbon in it and changing both bi weekly.
I also planned on adding Kalk to my top-off water container and bi weekly magnesium sulphate solution to the tank, from day one.
How does this start up sound? (I would begin like this as soon as I added a few pieces of live rock to my DIY rock and begin cycling the tank with a dead mussel).
On a completely unrelated topic, feeding
I need a one stop feed for everything, as I can be away a lot and I don't want to overcomplicate things for the kids. I was thinking of making up some homemade frozen food A finely blended one for turkey basing the corals with and a larger one for the fish.
Assume eventually the tank contains :
Clowns
Wrasse
Goby's
Chromis
firefish
(you get the fish idea nothing fancy)
and
Zoas
Mushrooms
GSP
Lobophyllia
Maybe plating Monti
Maybe Acropora
and usual clean up crew
Would I be missing anythings dietry needs if I made the following mix to feed :
Raw mussels
Raw prawns
Raw whitefish (sprats maybe)
Raw squid
cyclops
Mysis
lemon juice
Nori sheets
A handful of cichlid pellets
A wizzed up in a blender and frozen as a sheet to feed and spot feed with.
What do people think?
Thanks in advance guys
