Hi all. I am new to this forum and mainly need opinions on whether or not "small animals" can get into the tank and take fish out.
I've had a 75 gallon for 6 years now with 2 fancy goldfish and 1 goldfish whom was the first to our family. Oddly we put 1 baby minnow in last year who grew pretty big. They all took to each other great with no problems.
This morning I went downstairs about 5:30am to feed them and I noticed our first goldfish and the minnow (whom was about 5 inches long) were gone. I looked all over and found my goldfish outside of the tank about a couple of feet away. I noticed he was dried out and oddly colored. I looked all over for the minnow with no luck. I work at 6am and tried to figure out as much as I couldn't but ultimately left it up to my fiancé. He found the minnow about 7 feet from the tank under the dresser with a chunk taken out of him.
The dresser is about an inch off of the ground and he was taken completely under neath.
We have an older cat, whom is 2 stories upstairs and does not leave that area. We have a baby gate to keep the dogs away. Her food/littler is also up in her area. She used to live in the basement last year until she migrated when I moved in and never bothered the fish, she had no interest. She has severe hip dysplasia/arthritis and can hardly jump on the bed with no issues. She's a "different" feline and doesn't go anywhere in the house but our two rooms. If I put her over the gate, she cries. Also, there is nothing for her to jump on to get into the tank. The top is about 5 foot off of the ground.
When I got home today from work, I brought her in the basement and she was terrified and ran up and cried at the gate so I can put her over. Overall, she couldn't have gotten the fish out of that tank.
We are going to put a food plate out under the dresser and also a trail camera but, do you have any ideas as to what could have happened. Are there any types of rodents/snakes/etc.. that could have done anything ? I live in the country so any type of creature is possible.
