Carbon Dosing- whats the modern view?

So, I started vodka dosing to remove really, really high nitrate.

I started at >64ppm nitrate, and loosely followed the charts. By the time I hit 15ml/day (90G/400L) tank, I was down to 0.5 - took about 2.5-3 months.

The only 2 negatives in my tank is (1) that I also started with really high phosphates, which I'm still grappling with, I thought the vodka would also reduce that (and I'm sure it did, a bit), but I've eliminated nitrate, but still have phosphate. The other issue I have (2) but I'm not 100% sure is related to the vodka, is that I've got a hint of cloudiness in the tank. It might be the bacteria that the carbon encourages, I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, what prompted me to make this post isn't my own tank, it's that when I started vodka dosing, I read 100+ threads, articles, blogs etc about the subject, and they all seemed to be from 2006 - 2011 - there wasn't much that was recent.

So, my question for discussion, is carbon dosing still popular, what are the most popular methods, do we know of any long term issues?

How many folks swear by it, swear off it etc?
