I've made the decision that I'm converting my 240 gallon saltwater tank to a freshwater native tank that I'm going to try to keep a few breeding fish in. I'm thinking I'll end up with yellow perch and blue gills / sunfish, probably not a lot of fish, probably 1 male and 3 females of each from what I'm reading... if I'm able to get them to breed in the tank I'll use the fry to grow out in my aquaponics system in the greenhouse.
So I'm researching how I want to set the tank up for native fish... I want it to be a nice display tank still since it's the centerpoint of our family room, so I'm planning on some decent pieces of driftwood (as large as I can fit with the eurobracing on the top of the tank...) and want to have some native looking plants (might not be actual native plants, but some tall seaweed looking stuff for fish to hide in). So currently I'm stuck on what substrate I want to use... from what I've read the fish will burrow in gravel to make their beds to lay eggs. I want something that is going to be good for growing plants though, so my original thought was miracle grow potting soil capped with gravel maybe just in the back to put the plants in, then in the front put just gravel so it's not as likely to make a mess if they are building beds in the gravel (unless they are stubborn and only make beds in the back).
Any other thoughts on what to do to give the plants a good growing medium while not making a total mess if it gets stirred up? Anyone kept native fish before? Any pointers on how to make them comfortable to breed?
