Hi everyone,
I have been in the hobby for about 15 years with the same tank running. It started life in a 20L with 20 pounds of live rock and 20 pounds of live sand with a 175 watt 20k pendant. I always had high stocks of zoo's, mushies, and LPS with a couple of fish. Three years ago I finally upgraded it to a 56 gallon cube 30w x 18d x 24t. About a year after the upgrade I got a big phosphate bloom(from tap water) and subsequently a giant green hair algae bloom that smothered and killed off all the live stock in the tank including a Clarkii I had for 9 years and a blue hippo that I had for 10.
The tank sat there with minimal attention for about a year, but the last few months I have had a resurgence to get it beautiful again.
I have installed a new skimmer, canister filter, power heads and been doing massive water changes with nutrisea water and I have gotten the tank parameters back in the happy zone. I ordered a cleaning crew and they have been doing a job on the hair algae and I have begun repopulating it. I have ordered all new supplements, additives, buffers, liquid foods, and installed a new bulb.
But I am looking into switching the light out for a new system. It has an adjustable metal halide that runs a 250watt 20k for 2.5 hours, then 400watt 20k for 5 hours, then 250watt 20k for 2.5 hours. And it has always served well. I have always run metal halides and the 20k seems to give me the best look and provide nice growth.
I am looking to swtich to LED and cannot decide between the AquaIllumination Hydra52HD, Ecotech Radion Pro G3, or the GHL Mitras LX6200 HV. With the tank being soo deep I am not sure I will get good par all the way to the substrate.
Can anyone weigh in and maybe provide some insight into what a good direction would be to go in?
Here are a couple pictures before the explosion.
Thanks for the help!
