Hello all,
Recently I removed my coral banded shrimp from my 2 year established 120 gallon tall reef tank... of course I had to disassemble the center most section of my rockwork to get the this pesky guy... but actually the moving went well and no coral were damaged in the process (I ALSO REMOVED 2 DECENTLY SIZED LIVE ROCKS FROM MY SYSTEM TO FREE SOME SPACE). Anyways.. the shrimp was removed and all was well.. until a couple days later I noticed my massive elegance colony was sucked in a pissed off.... so I immediately did a full course of tests...
My tank for the past 2 years.. had readings of ZERO accross the board, including phosphates....
Approximately 3 days after the shrimp was removed (ALONG WITH THE TWO LIVE ROCKS).... I was seeing... po4 - .5 to 1 and nitrate - 80-100 ppm!!!!
I freaked out and immediately did a massive 50% water change.... this brought my nitrates down to about 50-60 ppm.
its been about 2 weeks now... i have done (3) 30% water changes since the 50% water change... and im STILL seeing about 20-30 ppm nitrate...
All my corals are very happy and fully extended and loving life... but I will sleep better at night knowing my nitrates are constant 5ppm or less...
What is everyones thought? I have amazing flow in my tanks and blow my rocks off every normal water change (2 weeks). Possibly bad pocket of waste I stirred up? Will the nitrates eventually even out with normal water changes? should i keep doing water changes until I get the nitrate to read zero?
Another thing I may note... My big blue hippo tang had ich 3 weeks prior to removing the shrimp... I was feeding the tank GENEROUSLY because she was eating well and I wanted her to eat as much as she could.. and she is now very healthy again and ich spot free... possible i could of over fed the tank and now seeing those effects?? I am now feeding once ever 2-3 days.
Please help... dont want my precious corals to die from nitrates!!
