Coral piece question

Hello everyone, new to this thread and this is my first post. Also fairly new to the reef tank. Currently have a 75 gallon tank that I have been cycling for about 10 days now. Just live rock and artificial reef rock, snails, hermits, and one damsel. Planned on keeping it that way for another few weeks. I bought this tank used and it was in really good shape. Had about 20 pounds of live rock and a big coral piece that has been sitting bone dry for at least a year. I am trying to find out what this particular coral piece is. I can tell it had taller branches at the top as many have been clearly broken. Also it looks like in a few places a type of polyp? is trying to grow. Also notice in some spots a purplish looking wax and I am going to assume that is algae. If it is alga is it bad algae? Anyone know what this coral piece is, if it can come back to life, and what that purplish growth is, please just look at my name, lol.
