How much rock is necessary? (for bacteria)

I am looking at removing some of the rock I have in my tank...so I was wondering how much rock do we really need and how much is just taking up space?



Also what's a safe way to remove? Would removing 10% and waiting a week be OK or should I dose some bacteria to help?
