Sponge filters are a nitrate factory. People love to say this on these forums and its a myth. If you keep a sponge filter clean it will produce no more nitrate than any other form of biological filtration. Just ring it out in the water you pull on your weakly water change to get the detritus out of it and chuck it back into the last chamber of your sump.
But why would I do this? Because you can easily move it.
It is instant bio filtration for a QT tank or a hospital tank and problems establishing bio filtration for QT and HT tanks is often listed as a excuse for doing neither. Sick fish need medical attention and new arrivals need to be quarantined.
