time for a new sandbed

Question for you experts in here was doing some sandbed research on line and a lot of stuff says replace it every few yrs mine is almost four yrs old and was not live just some cheap white **** here is the question should I replace it with live sand and is two inches worth ok will I cause a mini cycle or is bb the way to go these days
