New to salt tanks, I have a 120G African Cichlid tank and the 37G used to be my grow-out tank for the big tank, but it is fully stocked for now, and I've been contemplating salt for some time.
Tank is 37G column tank, 20"W x 18"D x 24"H, filter is Fluval 406, currently bio-foam, 2 trays of bio-max, last tray carbon, not sure if carbon is needed, but as I used tap to fill it, I figured the carbon can't hurt during cycling. I have a Tunze 6045, set at 2nd flow increment, which I think is around 650 gph (?). Heater is 200W Jager, substrate is 20lb Arag-Alive and 20 lb. carib-sea ivory coast cichlid sand that was one month old from a substrate change when it was a grow out tank, so given it was fairly clean (figured any small amounts of debris would contribute some very small ammonia when stirred up, which won't hurt since fishless cycling), and colors match closely, and that original substrate had aragonite in it as well, I mixed them. Light is a Hydra on the wireless controller, and using salinity salt and Prime on fill. Also used 1 small container of Fritzzyme #9, figured it can't hurt. Right now I have maybe between 0 and .25 Ammonia, not sure if coloration is exact same on API fresh and salt kits, Nitrites and Nitrates at 0.
Now for the questions, if hopefully you've gotten this far:
One, is it OK to add a large amount, like all I would want in, of live rock right now? With the odd dimensions I intend to sort of make a horseshoe shape of rock with a dip at one point heading back towards the 406 intake about 2" off the substrate in a back corner. Don't have any idea how many lb. that is going to take but from my holey rock in my cichlid tank, I figure probably 60-75 lb.?
Two, planned stocking is a lot of softies, one SPS (was advised by LFS that one would be OK since I am pretty OCD with maintenance), LPS corals, and max of 4 to 5 fish, thinking pair of clowns, possibly a flame angel (my Wife's favorite fish), and a royal gramma. What is too much flow in a reef tank? Currently I have the 406 and the 6045 at opposite back corners, both aimed at an angle towards front of tank. There is quite a current resulting from that washing down the front glass, and the surface of the substrate has motion throughout much of the tank as the current blows around. Is this going to be too much for the inhabitants? I know the live rock will greatly affect the currents and make some areas of less flow which I can use for LPS at the deeper depths where light will be less intense also. Once cycled I just don't want to put in a couple of clowns (possible gold maroon clowns) and have them tossed around too much.
Sorry for the long post, tried to hopefully provide as much info as I could, but I'm sure I missed some things, so take it easy on the new guy
