Fallowing a catastrophic failure of my tank where i lost all but a clown fish and one spot rabbit last Christmas I am now looking to re-start the system but with some new toy's and an "early warning" system to make sure this wont happen again.
The Crash:
power outlet for extension cord died (Yay Old Baltimore infrastructure) and my GF who was taking care of feeding and topping off while I was away just thought the tank was on a "sleep cycle", so no heat, no flow and, no light, no filtration for 3 weeks will crash your system... in fact, I'm amazed that the clown and rabbit survived, the water temp was around 55 when I got back.
So what i want to do now is dump the sump, and go with a Canister filter
Iw had great success with this one:

for my fresh water planted tanks, Will it do good for a saltwater as well? or do people have preferences when it comes to canister filters for reef tanks?
I am also looking to get a RODI unit after doing some intensive reading on Baltimore Tap water. This is the unit i have been looking at (yes its only RO, but you can add DI via addon tube)

Any sugestions for a bang-for-buck RODI units are welcome, honestly I am quite lost in the world of these units and cant seem to understand the difference between some of the 100$ 50gpd system and the 300$ 50gpd systems.
I would also like to hear from anyone in the Baltimore area that is using Tap water or has experience with it when it comes to Saltwater tanks, what is the quality of our water?
So for the "early warning" system
I'w seen people use Arduino systems to great effect to measure water level and temperature, in fact, my brother who is an electrical engineer (slowly getting pushed into the hobby, came up with the idea of having a very compact locally hosted website with a live update that could be easily accessed via smart phone.
The idea being that even thou I travel a lot I could monitor the most basic parameters of the tank from anywhere, and If I see a drop i could have whoever I have doing the feeding, topping off trouble shooting it for me.
Eventually Id like to have a Arduino interface that would update me on temp, water level, have a button interface to turn of skimmer/filter for feeding and upload an image of the tank to a local server (or dropbox) ever hour. But thats a future project
Tank specs:
26.4g (weird right)
Tank is currently offline and dry
Livestock got a new home via contacts at the LFS
