New owner of Biocube 14

I purchased a biocube 14 gallon with stand, 15 pounds of ultra fiji live rock, a refractometer, thermometer, test kit, ~15 pounds live sand, an ATO, a protein skimmer (which I've been advised to not turn on until after the cycle) and Dr Tims one and only.

I've set up the tank with the salt water reading 1.026, have the live sand bed, and put in the live rock today along with the Dr Tims one and Only.

What are my next steps? What lights should I be running through the cycle (if at all)?

I've attached some pics of my current set up. Any suggestions and input are greatly appreciated

Heater VS Temperature Controller vs Both

I have a hydor heater in my 29 gallon biocube and its running mid to high 80s, seems like the light is always on and the heater does not shut off, I was going to by an ehiem heater because they seem to have the most support, however if I got a temp controller it shut on and off the heaters to a specific temp even though the heaters should do that anyways. Advice on either new heater, or just a temp controller or both. Not looking to spend more than $40 on a temp controller if I do go that route, i was looking at inkbird.

New and weird things

I've been slacking a little in maintenance lately (got a puppy a few months ago) and a couple weird things have grown in my absence. One is a weird sponge like ball. It's clearish white and today it's spikey. The other comes out from under a rock and looks kind of like a caterpillar/urchin. It looks like it has spines and sand caught in them. It flinched when I cleaned the glass in front of it to get a better shot...

Nitrates slowly going up

I have been at 0-2ppm nitrates for a very long time. I do run a bio pellet reactor with BRS pellets.

I started feeding my coral with coral frenzy twice a week. I feed 1/8tsp for a 40 gallon tank

Ever since I started doing this my coral has exploded with growth and color. The negative is my nitrates are now 5-7ppm

I do not want them that high. Obviously the system is over loaded to process it. I have been doing this 2 months now. It hasn't gone above 7 and never below 5 with this new feeding.

To the question. Can I keep running my high capacity phosphate remover and bio pellet reactor (they are separate) and add red sea NO3:PO4-X?

I would be doing NO3:PO4-X in a lower dose since I have the other two reactors running.

I did brag on here a few months ago I went on vacation with no algae growth on glass after 8 days and now I have to clean every day. Its not heavy, but doesn't look good.

Need help identifying

I bought this new live rock that had a bunch of stuff on it that I have no idea what it is. Just curious if someone can help me out. thanks!

FINALLY registered

Yello,

My name is James and I have been RK for about 6 months and about 2 of them I have been really trying to have an awesome tank. I always look on this forum for answers but I have some questions and pictures that I can't find answers to.

I have a 28 gal nano, 2 clowns (EL and CHAPO) they're ruthless and eat anything and everything. They ate 4 peppermint shrimp in one night. Granted my nitrates and stuff were out of whack so I was trying not to feed them as much as often but anyway, they ate well @ 6 bucks a shrimp.

I have about 10-15 lbs of live rock and one of them I bought from the LFS had all kinds of coraline algae and I'm guessing some soft corals. I bought it because I knew it had good bacteria and it looked awesome.

I also have a fuge set up in the back of the nano with chaeto and something else but I don't have any culerpa bc I don't want to deal with the sexual or asexual stuff. and I have (1) 150w MH 4 little blue LED for night and 4 12k LED for my fuge.

Anyhow, can I post pictures here of things that I need your guys help on identifying? :help:

And here's the Official TRT Chorus® to sing.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOOOOOO YOUUUU!!!

Tomorrow at 4 am off to Ohio with the Volvo on a flatbed.

Early at the airport and all I could find was crappy coffee. Have a good day.

switching tank

Hi all, really pleased to find this site and all the knowledgable people on it.
i have spent hours looking through many threads on here but have been unable to find an answer to my particular problem.
I am going to be upsizing my tank and the new tank will have to sit where the old one is, the complication i have is that i have serious Aiptasia problem so i would like to be able to use some fresh live rock in the new tank then sterilise the old rock before adding at a later date.
Obviously this is going to trigger a nitrogen cycle, i was wondering if i connected up an external filter to the existing tank and run it for a while and then transfer it to the new tank would it be able to handle the filtration until the new rock matures?
Also as i would be transferring most of the old water would the be a risk of spores from the aiptasia infecting the new rock?
I would really welcome any thoughts and other ideas of how to go about this.

Many thanks,
Mark

Stocking help with a 30g

Hey guys, My little 30g is running all smooth still after adding my two little clowns almost a month ago now.
Was just wondering how feesable for the size and aggression wise it is to keep these other fish in my tank, I won't be adding them all at once obviously this is just my wishlist or fish i've seen and like kinda thing hahaha

I like green coral gobies and they're often at my LFS so i was thinking either one or two of them, i read they need coral though so would i have to buy some corals for them?

Cardinal fish are also very common at my LFS and i reckon they look sweet especially pajama cardinals and bangaii, they're both kept in one tank at the store so I am assuming I would be able to keep them both, if its not too much for my tank. And how many would you guys recommend because I read they are schooling fish but also read that they dont school so idk ahahha?

Finally maybe something like a watchman goby or a blennie :)

A lot of the fish they have at the LFS I see my tank is too small for so these are ones ive found to be ok in my size tank, but i feel that maybe a little over crowded haha. I am also keen to hear any fish you guys would recommend for a tank my size
Cheers :D

Red Planaria

I have managed to get an infestation of what appears to be red planaria. See photo below. Anyone with experience combating these have any info/guidance? My tank is completely covered. I have been siphoning like a mad man. I'm not too enthused with the flatworm exit. That where I am hoping you guys may have some alternatives.

Back again...Hmm whats this natural seawater?

Just a quick intro first. I have been away from Saltwater/Reef tanks for a few years, but coming back. I currently have nothing so once again I will be starting from scratch. I am planning on starting a 20g nano in the coming months. One Local store has a great price on the Innovative Marine 20 Gallon NUVO Fusion Nano Aquarium Premium Starter Kit ($399.99 but on sale for $349.99). So now my actual question.

All the stores around here carry the Imagitarium Pacific Ocean Water, and/or Natures Own Nutri-SeaWater. I was wondering how much of a good or bad idea using this as a regular water system for a 20g nano would be. Also does using one over the other mean you should be looking for fish or corals from the area these come from?

It's about Clam Time!

Premium Aquatics just got in some beautiful clams!! They are priced very well for the size of them (~5-6inches).

There are 11 of these beauties available, and we are allowing only 1 clam per customer. Let's do these at $100 each!!! Get them while you can!

Any questions, give us a call at 317.865.9005 or email us at livestock@premiumaquatics.com

Hiding the Sump?

Hey everyone,

Just kickstarted my 55 gallon reef tank (still cycling.)
I'm already starting the notice the amount of HOB equipment starting to build up and cause an eye soar.

Unfortunately the 10 gallon tank I planned to use as a sump doesn't fit under the stand that I built.

So I guess my question is does anyone have a crafty way of hiding the 10 gallon sump or is there another cheap alternative to using a regular 10 gallon tank as a sump?

Thanks everyone!

New to the scene

Hi all, sorry if I've posted this to the wrong area
First of all I'll introduce myself, I'm Dan I'm 21 from East Sussex, England.
I have recently really wanted to keep marine fish so I thought I would just get on with it, I have a 20 gallon tank it's been running for about 2 months and I just got 2 orange Hawaiian hermit crabs, a cleaner shrimp and 2 turbo snails, they seem to be happy and grazing, and I plan to get 2 clownfish , can you give me a run down on any information I should have on any of these species
The tank currently has a canister filter (which some have said it's bad but it's all I've got at the moment ) a powerhead /heater etc
Any information you have is greatly appreciated like where can I get hermit crab shells and how do I know when they need to change their shell?
Thanks guys hope I'm not boring you all with my novice questions haha

Dan

Not getting email notifications

For a couple years now I haven't been getting email notifications for thread responses and private messages. I've managed this issue by checking the forum often, but if I forget to check I'll never know that I received a private message, or a response on a thread. My e-mail address is correct, and when I do a password reset I do receive that email. It's just the thread response and private messages I don't seem to get email notifications for.

Thanks for your help!

Coralife 32 LED Biocube filtration

Hey y'all, this will be my first topic and post here so please be patient with me. I have a new Coralife 32 LED Biocube that I just set up (3 days). I am a new reefer so I am looking for just some advise on a few different ways of filtration that I have seen being used on 29 Biocubes (29 and 32 have only size, lighting, and stock filtration differences).

I will be adding simple soft coral and maybe LPS coral with some basic fish and invertebrates.

My question is this: Which filtration system would be best and with that system would you run a protein skimmer. Below are the options I am weighing.
A. Stock filtration

B. InTank media basket:
Top shelf - sponge with filter floss
Middle shelf - Puregen
Bottom shelf - Chemi-pure Blue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJop...&feature=share

C. Eshopps foam/sponge block filter x2 w/micro filtration pad on top
1L SeaChem Matrix media w/media bag 100ml SeaChem Matrix carbon
100ml SeaChem Matrix Puregen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWJ2...&feature=share

So any help would be great on which and why. Thanks

Protien skimmer

I have a 40 gallon reef tank with 40 pounds live rock and live sand. I'm not sure the protein skimmer I have is working it's a redhead prize I got from a friend . I don't see any foam or separate although it also puts me to bubbles into my tank. I'm looking to buy a new one any recommendations? I've been looking at an octopus brand but would like opinions please

Lights and Skimmer for sale... again :)

I was looking through my shed and I saw that I still have an old skimmer, and two Tek T5 lights. So, I thought I'd try selling them again.

The Tek T5 lights are 36" 4 bulb fixtures. One has bulbs, and one doesn't, but the bulbs are old and need to be replaced. I'll sell the lights for $75 each, or $130 for the pair.

The skimmer is an ASM G5 skimmer. It has two Sedra 9000 pumps. It had the recirculate mod done to it in the past, but the holes were patched up as the mod didn't seem to help foam production. One of the pumps' covers is broken and has zip ties to hold it in place. You can run it this way, or replace the pump. This skimmer is great at skimming, but it isn't pretty. I was asking $150 before, but it needs to go, so I'll take $75 firm. The one Sedra pump is probably worth close to that on its own! :)

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Just changed my flight so I have all day to pack Friday. Moving on Saturday. A friend is driving my Sentra while I tow the Volvo. I hope she is serious about being able to not destroy my transmission or clutch.

Acro PC to LEDs

Ok, so I just bought an Acro from a local chain that will not be named when I went to get a new filter, and they were running it under PC lights with no actinic :doh:and I have an AI prime LED. I've been reefing for a while and have experience acclimating coral under normal circumstances, but with this dramatic of a change, I am at a loss. If anyone has any advice, it'd be a lot of help.

Right now I'm using the acclimation feature, and everything is dimmed to 80% of what I usually run except cool while, which I left at 60% since it has been surviving on white only PC for who knows how long. It's at the top of the tank, in medium flow, since I figured dimming the lights would be better than constantly moving it. Right now it is the only coral, so I can play with the lighting all I want.

Disclaimer: It cost next to nothing and was about to be killed by Cyno/bad lighting/dying leather in the same tank anyways, so if it survives, I get a nice, cheap, Acro. If not, it at least had a better chance of survival than at the store.

Currently it is pretty bleached out towards the base, but it still has visible polyps, and is a pale neon green on the top half. No tissue damage or recession. I did an iodine dip, and used an eyedropper to blow away cyno from the base and plug before it was put in the tank. Tank parameters are fine, 0's all around, 7.8 pH, ect, so I'm just worried about lighting at the moment.

Please Help Identify!!

Hey Everyone,

First time posting here! I've got a 9 month old 75 Gallon FOWLR Saltwater tank. Everything we've ever had, I've always been able to quickly identify. I can't seem to find out this guy. The pictures I have are taken from the bottom of our tank, it doesn't seem to move from this one spot. It's brown and the color kind of cascades to black. I believe I see a bunch of segments, but at times the shape doesn't even seem normal, like it changes.

Eek! I don't know. Help would be appreciated. Want to make sure this is not a "bad one." We haven't added rock in a while but have added some new fish, so I'm hoping because we haven't added any new rock this guy has been around and is harmless. Thanks!

A soggy Tuesday at the shore

Good morning TRT Friends, and....HAPPY TUESDAY! RAIN, and in the 70's. With chances of rain the rest of the week. But like most of you folks, we could use it.....except for Vinnie, and just realized I haven't seen him around lately? Hope he/you are O.K. Thomas's English muffins with an assortment of jellies to go with our coffee and pink milk for starters. Felt good being back at work, and with only a little ice to get me feeling groovy last night, am no worse for the wear. Hope all have a good day ahead of them, and be safe,

Ich... I know... :(

Hey guys.

I had an ich outbreak after introducing a new fish (no QT) and then a power outage that overstressed my display.

I lost that fish (blue tang), and my beloved coral beauty.

I know some fish are immune, and I'm wondering exactly what the mechanism for that is? Are there cysts infecting them that their immune systems kill off? Or do the cysts never attach?

I'm down to 4 fish. 2 are still in the display, 2 are in hospital tank. The two left in the display NEVER showed any sign of infection. I removed the infected fish fairly quickly, and they've been in hospital for nearly 4 weeks.

If my other fish are immune, how is the parasite continuing its life cycle?

I know to completely rid the display of Ich, going fallow for 72 days is the recommendation.

Trying to understand how the life cycle is continuing if they aren't hosting immune fish in the display.

this is a 75 mixed reef with 20g sump. I'm running an Emperor Aquatics Smart Lite 25 Watt UV Sterilizer.

I know UV isn't the cure, but at least it's probably helping a tiny bit.

Thanks again.

Hoping I don't have to go through the process of catching the last two, acclimating them to hypo, then introduction them to the HT. I also am unsure how long it is safe to keep these guys at 1.008-1.009 w/out adverse effects.

Good golly there's growth

Hello all! Not much point to this thread just documenting my coral growth and sharing it for all to see. My birdsnest is starting to split like crazy and my candy cane is splitting as well. My new monti's are encrusting on the rock now and my mushrooms went from one to 7 on the same rock. Glad to see things are thriving not surviving

This birdsnest went from being forked 2, to now having 5 new splits starting

Aftermarket Replacement Pump CSS 220

Hello, I'm looking to see if anyone has had luck with using an aftermarket or different type of skimmer pump than the original one. I have a 220 Coralife Super Skimmer which is showing it's age. I think the design is OK, but I've been having problems with the pump aging. Has anyone used an aftermarket type of needle wheel or pinwheel type pump with their skimmer with any success? I'd like to try a different type of pump because the original Ri0 220 pump was fairly terrible to begin with in terms of air/water ratio.
Mostly I think that the current one just doesn't pull enough air into the skimmer, even with various mods like an airpump/air valve, volute mods etc...
I'm hoping that I can replace the pump without having to replace the skimmer for under $200.
Coralife specs show that a pump between 500-700 should work fine for this, which is in the range I need for the return pump which runs around 700gph.

weird green tips on soft coral algae?

overnight one of my soft corals has some weird brown tips forming on the end.. Looks like algae but Im not sure. I can suck some of it off with a turkey baster until the coral retracts but getting most of it is difficult without the coral hiding. There is another piece of the same type of coral a few inches away and it has none of these growth on it..

A little background on my tank:
-46 gallon bow tank converted for saltwater with a sump
-octopus rh-50 protein skimmer
-light is Hydra HD 2600 set to 60% power (65 watts) for 7 hours a day no red or green spectrum
-The light sits 8 inches above a glass lid to reduce evaporation
-The water has testing clean for nitrates, ammonia, and PH levels
-The tank has been running and cycled for 2 months now on R/O water

NOTE: I cant post images or links, my account is to new.
Thanks in advance!

90 gallon stocking advice

Hi Guys,

I recently upgraded from 13g nano tank to 90 gallon tank. currently I have below stock in 90g.

1 - ocellaris clown
1 - green chromis
1 - electric blue damsel
1 - anthias
1 - cleaner wrasse
1 - neon goby
1 - bicolor blenny
1 - juvenile tomato clown
1 - bangaai cardinal

total 9 fishes - all of them are roughly an inch size except neon goby and dr wrasse which are longer.

invertebrates
1 - hermit crab
1 - carpet anemon
2 - bubble tip anemone ( actually one which split into 2)

I am planning to add some more fish (say 3-4), 1 blood shrimp and some corals. Have I overloaded my tank already? if not what is the ideal number of fish i can keep in 90 gallon.please consider corals too. Thanks.

Also please comment on my fish selection for my reef tank. Thanks.

Manic *onday

*orning everyone.

At the home office in the Boston area this morning. Not exactly sure what I am working on now, but will find out a little today.

Cleveland is a lot more small town, and forgot how much I dislike the big city.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good day. There is a big urn of coffee here to share until the regulars show up.

What is this?

Can anyone help me identify this? I found this when I was cleaning my tank. Is it eggs?

I'm planning on introducing my first fish into my aquarium today since it has finally finished its cycle.. however, my pH is at 7.9. Would this be okay for a little bit or should I raise it before adding any livestock to the tank

Ro/di

I'm looking at Rodi units to buy and there are so many what does everyone recommend for easy to set up and use for an40 gallon tank?

Sunday greetings!

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is read, and plenty for everyone! Fresh apple crumb cake for starters.
Combine that with a glass of cold milk, you've got a good starter until someone else chimes in with more good eats.

Helen - We need a photo of your new hair cut! Good idea to get away for a few to freshen up your weariness.

Jeff - Glad to hear that Kirby was a good boy during his ear washing. I hope he gets rid of all whatever is causing his grief.

pmark!! Great to see you.

Off to church. Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Made a Discovery today

My reed tank temp escalated this summer due to the hot summer in Chicago. Within a week my acan corals were bleached. I then purchased a chiller and stabilized the temp issue. I wondered how will my Acan color back up and after performing searches on the internet I didn't not find a concrete answer how. Well after a couple months my acans are coloring back up but what I did notice is the bleach corals are attracting the algae from healthy corals. It seems they are finding a healthy host to populate and are moving in. I took notice after I place the bleached crawls randomly throughout my tank and they are changing to the colors of the neighbor in corals. I would think that if you have a bleach coral you can choose the new color by placement. Please share you thoughts

Did my Bicolor Blenny kill my Yash Goby?

I have a 50 Gallon Reef tank I am setting up for seahorses. I have 2 Firefish, a 2" Bicolor Blenny and I HAD a Yasha Goby/Pistol Shrimp pair. The last fish to go in was the Bicolor, who shortly thereafter took up residence for a couple days in the same rock/burrow as the Yasha Goby and Tiger Pistol Shrimp. From that day on I have not seen the Yasha. I can see, however, that the Pistol Shrimp is alive and well in the burrow where he stays. Is it possible that the Bicolor, who now never goes in that burrow, killed the Yasha Goby? The Yasha used to be out in front of her burrow with the Pistol Shrimp nearby inside. I have not seen the Yasha in 2-3 weeks, since the Bicolor first came into the tank. Thoughts?

Do I dare add another Shrimp Goby? If so, what would be the best kind to add?

Stocking for Pico

Hi everyone,
So i am in the process of setting up a 4 gallon pico reef and wondering what to stock it with.

I am thinking 3 sexy shrimp an emerald crab, porcelain crab and then fill it with lps and soft corals. Also if i were to put a fish in it would eb a goby maybe a green coral goby, however the tank is going to be rimless so would that be ok ?

if you have any suggestions or changes to the stocking list then it would eb greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Alfie

Rise and shine Saturday!

Good morning TRT! 2 days in a row I've been up before all. Must be some kind of record. Got coffee brewing for all. I love Saturday mornings but it always works out to where I can't sleep in. Ah well, least I don't have to go to work.
I talked to my boss yesterday about some training they want me to go to. Next month or the month after I am going to have to travel to Atlanta Georgia. Not too thrilled about that since it's a 9 hour drive. But I guess it beats a day at work. I'll be off the entire week for some serious transmission training. And on the hours I'm out I'll be driving around The Walking Dead film locations! Woot woot. That's the only positive side to it. I love the walking dead and it's filmed just outside of Atlanta.

Algae

Does anyone know if this is hair algae or a different type of green algae as it growing around the base stem of my leather toadstool and on my rocks. My turbo snails eat this but it grows back to quick.

Which apex controller would I need?

To say I am proud of my tank is an understatement. I built it exactly how I wanted and this bad boy is on cruise control. I never planned on getting a controller but looking at my investment into relaxation of close to $4000 now, it would be silly to lose my tank to a rouge heater or chiller.

I cannot figure out if I need the middle of the pack apex controller or apex jr.

I'll say right now, I will never have calcium reactors or the big boy toys. What I have as equipment is where I will stay. So below is my equipment list. Please help me figure out the ideal controller.

1) Tunze comline wavebox 6208
2) Tunze Osmolator Universal 3155 Auto Top Off
3) Aqua Euro 1/13hp chiller run with a 200GPH pump
4) From sump area to tank Cobalt MJ1200 powerhead
5) Innovative marine media reactor running bio pellets
6) Innovative marine media reactor running high capacity GFO
7) Innovative marine Skimmer
8) HMO-150 FINNEX HEATER
9) Zetlight 6500a apex ready
