My wife and I have a 120 gallon reef aquarium that is very healthy besides the hair algae which drives me crazy. Today after thinking about our water loop, I realized we have no actual filter; either canister or HOB. The cycle from the tank goes to either a HOB protein skimmer, rated for a 120 tank, or an overflow, which then leads to the sump tank. The sump tank is a standard setup with two filter socks, two large bags of activated carbon, ceramics, and K3 filter media. This then is pumped back to the main tank to start the cycle again.
Would the sump tank be considered a filter or do we need a canister filter in tandem with the sump? She argues the sump is a giant filter. My thought is the sump is not doing enough to filter the tank from the constant hair algae that crops up.
Thanks! First post, if this is in the wrong place.
