New Reef Tank

I am purchasing a used tall 30 gallon tank with about 30 lbs of live rock. I think there may be some dormant coral on the rock (like mushrooms). Please excuse if I am not using the correct terminology. Any advice on how to handle the new tank. I imagine I will not have to cure the rock. I think I do have to cycle it. In a lot of online research it says to pick soft spots off the rock and "clean" it. Since my rock is already cured (I think) should I still remove stuff. How do I know if I am removing something I should keep.
