Coral Only Tank (No Fish)

Hello!

I have been thinking about setting up a small tank (10 gallons or less) that I could use to create colorful, peaceful coral tank (zoanthids, duncans, etc). I want it to be bare bottom for the ease of cleaning and I want it to be fishless so there will be minimal waste in the tank. However, this task has raised multiple questions.

1) If I don't have fish, and thus don't feed except for occasional coral food, do I need to have a 'cycled' tank before I start stocking it? For example, can I grab a 10 gallon tank, fill it with water from my established 60 gallon tank, add one of the live rocks from my established tank, and just put some corals in it? If I don't have any sand, wouldn't the live rock be enough to cycle the new tank right away?

2) Do I need any forms of mechanical filtration (hang on back filters, protein skimmers, etc)? My logic is if I'm not feeding the tank, there should be a minimal amount of things that need to be removed from the system and therefore I don't need any filtration (of course a weekly water change would take care of any excess).

So in the end, is all I need a tank, live rock, lights, a heater, and a powerhead?

Sorry for all the questions. I have maintained my 60 gallon tank for over 2 years and have bred clownfish for about 6 months now. But this coral-only tank would be a whole new world to me.

Thank you,
Cam
