So- I have a basic 75 gallon set up that has been running for 3 years. By basic, I mean no sump, a couple of power heads, skimmer and a heater.
The goal was for soft corals only. The first year or two was great. Palys were growing all over the place. Kenya trees were full and dropping branches nearly daily.
I decided to switch from sand to a thin layer of crushed coral for easy cleaning. I then added a skimmer. Since then coral growth has stopped. The Kenya trees have been nothing but little nubs and the palys are shrunk up as well. This has been the case for close to a year now.
My thoughts are that the tank just isn't nutrient rich enough with the more thorough cleanings and the skimmer. Would I benefit from running the skimmer every other day? What about replacing the crushed coral with sand again? Looking for ideas.
