Protein skimmer filling too fast

Hello, I'm new to the forum, but I'm not new to saltwater. However, because I've been out of the hobby for 10 years, I'm crusty and rusty and running into an issue I never had a problem with before. :D

My problem is with my SeaClone protein skimmer. It's filling the cup way too fast. I've never had this problem before in the past so I'm at a loss.

I have a 55 gallon tank in the cycling process right now. There is 60 lbs live sand and a bit of live rock in the tank. I'm taking it slow and it's been doing it's thing for a week now. I'm just patiently waiting until it's good and ready. The filter I have is a Fluval 405. I understand that a protein skimmer is not needed right now for cycling, so it is turned off, however I have been using this time to work out the kinks. I discovered a few kinks - one a wave maker that got temperamental (new one on it's way) and the protein skimmer.

The protein skimmer has been filling way too fast. This is the same protein skimmer I used back when I had my tank running years ago and didn't have an issue with it. Worked like a champ. But now it's driving me batty, because every time I turn it on it works fine for a couple hours and then it decides to suddenly fill the cup within 30 minutes.

I have made sure the air tube isn't blocked. I have torn it apart, cleaned it, and put it back together to make sure it is assembled properly. Everything seems to be in working order. The weird thing is that whenever I squeeze the sponge filter around the pump it brings the bubbles down and keeps it functioning properly for awhile (up to a couple hours) before it decides to go crazy again. I can't figure out the problem.

I've read that it could be going through the start-up process, but this isn't a brand new skimmer. This is the skimmer I used successfully years ago. So I don't think that should be a factor in this, but I could be wrong. Crusty and rusty, remember? ;D

Any ideas? Oh (and no offense please) but please please please don't just tell me to go out and buy the biggest and best protein skimmer around now. If I have to I will upgrade, but that will take some time and right now I want to get this functioning until I can get to that point. I know this skimmer works and does the job so I'd rather stick with it and get it working right first. Thanks! :D
