Rodi units: How do they work?

I want to get one, but I don't really know how they work. We have surprisingly good tap water where we live, but I still want an rodi unit because I want to reduce algae as much as possible. My mom is kind of concerned about waste water. Whats that? I want to get one, but I need to know how they work before I get one I guess. Thanks!
