New Nano reef....need a couple small tips

Hello everybody, I am a first time poster here but I have been doing my research on this site for a long time. I have had freshwater aquariums for over 15 years always wanted a marine aquarium, but due to my low budget I couldn't....until I considered a nano tank.

I am preparing to cycle my new Mr. Aqua 12 gallon long as a reef. I am going to cycle it with some water from a well established (5+ years old) tank, along with about 25 pounds of live rock that I will buy from the aforementioned aquarium. This guy's live sand is also in good shape, so I am going to take that as well.

Live rock will be my main source of filtration, along with power heads and a Fluval 105 that I am going to modify to be a refugium.

Once it is established, I plan on doing a 2.5 gallon water change once or twice a week.

Now the questions...

If I set this tank up with at least 1/3 of the volume of water coming from the established tank, how long will cycling take? Should I run the lights? If so, how long each day?

Also, I've been shopping around and I want to know your guys' opinion of the best aquarium salt, as well as a good dosing kit, supplements, etc.

How long should I wait to add livestock?

How long can live rock and corals be exposed to air during transport, and water changes?

Finally, after all of the research I have done, I still don't exactly know what I will put in the canister filter. I was thinking of just smashing a few pieces of live rock and throwing it in all of the empty compartments. I have taken the sponges and activated carbon out, and do not plan on using them.

What else am I missing here guys? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
