So a few weeks ago when I first started hunting around for a good LFS I came across one that had a bonded black and orange ocellaris clownfish pair. Of course I wanted them at the time but there was no way since my tank was new.
Now a couple of weeks later with nitrites dropping and ammonia at 0, I contemplated going back and purchasing them to pick up next week to put in my QT tank. I've been in the store 2-3 times over this timeframe and the fish looked good and healthy.
I come back today and of course find they sold the black one but the orange one was still there. The lady working there says she was mad they separated them and in her 22 years of experience she had never seen a black clownfish and they never order them, they just got this pair on trade.
I told her what my intentions had been and she said my tank wasn't ready for the fish since it still had nitrites. I told her I knew that and they would have been going in my QT tank until I was comfortable to put them in my DT. I also said I had been feeding my DT ammonia and its processing 2ppm every 24 hours and it was nearly the same as fish excrement.
She literally scoffed audibly in front of me and said, "not really." I told her ammonia was ammonia and she said it was not. I then got an eye roll when I told her I had put a piece of raw shrimp in at first and she said, "I guess I'm just old school and like to use fish to cycle my tanks."
After noticing the tap water conditioner all over the place used for their tanks, a Blue Tang swimming in a 20 gallon tank, her not knowing whether or not their clowns are captive bred or wild caught, and a bucket full of nets all put together for use.....I'M NOT GOING BACK EVER AGAIN!!!!!
