HOB vs External recirculating skimmer for 55 gallon

Hi All,



I'm trying to decide if getting an external skimmer is worth double the price.

I'm a beginner and setting up a 55 gallon from scratch. My end goal is to get corals but that is not happening anytime soon but I want to have that option.

I have no space shortage so I can set this up near the tank if need be. The cost is basically double as I will also need a pump.

Is there a real benefit or due to the size of the tank, it's better to spend the cash on other aspects like lights etc...
