Rebuilding my 56 Gal Column Tank

After following a few links around to build a custom LED array for my tank 56Gal. Column tank, several kept pointing back to here. That brought on enough currosity to register and dig around a little deeper on things to bring my tank up to acceptable condition. In that past two years I've moved to three different address, and now have my first child. The side effect to all this change has left my tank completely neglected. All I had to begin with was two cheap fish and a surprise red mushroom that came with a live rock I bought. Last year my pump locked up while i was away from the house and killed one of the two remaining fish. So then I upgraded to the Marineland C-360 paired with an overflow box, to get a little better filtration, and hopefully get my tank back on track. Then a week after that my tank heater shorted out and killed my remaining fish. now my tank is slightly too cold, the mushrooms are shriveling up and I have a bad algae problem.



My setup is almost a clean slate and I'm very open to suggestions for better care and tips to make the most of the tank I have. I am in the process of building a new Lighting system off the DIY guide found here, other than that im all ears.
