Admitting you have an issue is the first step, so lets go right to the second step. I have a 60 cube tank, with a mixture of lps, sps, softies and a clam. I also have seahorses, leopard wrasse, jawfish and a watchman goby.
I have a reef octopus skimmer, rated for 150 gallon, a phos reactor using phosgaurd, about 50 lbs of live rock, and an mp10. I also have a diablo 950 return pump, so after head pressure is about 600 gph.
I have only used reef crystals salt, and for some reason, the last month that I have been actively checking alk and ph, they have been, to my standards, low.
My ph runs right now at 7.78, and this is when the lights are on. I did a water change of 25 percent Saturday, and my ph monitor showed 8.0-8.1 for a day or so, then fell to where it is now. My alk is a 7 (api liquid test kit)
I am not sure about dosing, as I have never done it except one or two times. I have seachem 8.3, and kent super alk buffer. I have only used the kent once, and my ph went up to 8.1, but fell in 24 hours to 7.8.
I have plenty of flow, and tank is not near furnace, so I do not think co2 is the problem.
My question is, should I be dosing, everyday, with the buffer, to keep it higher, knowing it is going to fall shortly? Also if I do add, which when I did I placed it in top off RO water, do I add enough to the one gallon for one gallon of water, or do I dose enough for the entire 60 gallon tank?
Confused, and not sure if the salt is my problem. I know my lfs uses red sea coral pro, and keeps the alk around 10, but he also doses part a and part b.
Please help me understand the premise of dosing, and if doing that daily is a bandaid or a necessity.
Thanks
