15 Gallon Build

Unfortunately, due to moving I have to down size my tank, greatly.

I currently have a 55, soft coral dominated. It was poorly constructed, but I consider it my "learning tank". This build is where I get the chance to fix all of my mistakes!!!!

Tank - I settled on a 15 gallon Aqueon Column tank. I like the height.

Filtration- Due to the small size, I am going to focus on water changes (and save LOTS on salt). I am also considering a canister filter for mechanical and chemical filtration. I realize they can be nitrate factories if not cleaned. Any reason not to use it other than the before mentioned? Anyone use canister filters? This tank will not have a sump.

Lighting- I currently have 2 taotronic LED fixtures. I do enjoy them, and will be using one for the tank, with the other being back up. I will also add a Exocotic Blue/Magenta Stunner strip.

- It will have a custom hood housing the fixture and strip. My only concern is the proximity of the LEDs to the surface, as it will only be a few inches. I may add frosted glass (or similar) to help diffuse the light.

Livestock- as mentioned, it will be soft coral dominated, with montipora and some LPS. I will only have 1 clown and 1 goby with pistol shrimp. I may add more, but they will be inverts.

Aquascape- I am torn between a simple column, or an elaborate foam/rock/sand back ground. I believe a DIY background may prove to be more impressive. The tank is 24 inches tall.

Substrate- I am on the fence about sand. I do have a pistol shrimp, and I do like how the nice clean sand bed looks, but part of me thinks no sand will keep it much cleaner.

Nothing is here yet, but I just ordered the tank and stand. I have not purchased a filter, as I am still looking. I would prefer there be nothing hanging off of the tank, except for tubes.

Let me know if you have any, opinions on my current plan, or any other ideas.
