I have been doing some research on this subject and I have found many different opinions on this matter. The matter at hand is this...no more water changes OR not as frequent of water changes anymore...this is due to the amount of water you lose to evaporation.
Right now I currently have a 40 Gallon tank set up now with berlin style sump setup; for lighting I have two evergrow led fixtures that are only set to 50% at the highest point throughout the day. I must mention as well my tank is a rimless tank with two jebao wp40 power heads with a ton of surface agitation going on, which is one of the main reasons for so much water evaporation in my opinion. I currently have a 10 gallon holding jug with RO/DI water that I use in conjunction with my Auto Top Off. My tank evaporates roughly 7-8 Gallons a week, which is just under 20% volume of water my tank currently holds..(with live rock inside).
I do dose Alk., Ca., and Mg. on individual BRS Dosing pumps, and add I. and Trace Elements once every week...roughly 5 ml I. and 2.5 ml trace elements.....with all this being said; what are your thoughts on cutting down on water changes to once a month to possibly maybe once every other month?
I have been going with doing water changes once and month and changing roughly 30% of the water, my levels as far as the elements go are always pristine with the dosing pumps...I am seriously considering cutting back on the water changes all together to maybe once every other month. Please give me your thoughts on this!
