Hi everyone,
My husband and I are brand new to the reef tank hobby. Last week we acquired a 72 gallon established tank, with around 70 - 80 pounds of Live Rock & 60 pounds of live sand, an 8 year old maroon clown fish and a sailfin tang (the poor guy has no fins though! We feel so bad for him).
We have been reading through the wealth of information here, and have visited our LFS 4 times in the past week. However, we still have some questions I was hoping you could help us with.
Current set up:
72 gallon bow front tank
Coral life UV sterilizer (1 LFS said it was like chemo for our tank and to toss it. 1 said it was good to have and to keep it. Thoughts?)
Tom Aquarium Pro Series Filter (we know this is old and we need a new one)
Jager Heater
We know the filter is old, and we will need a new one when we add fish and corals. We want to get a sump. One LFS suggested an eshopps RS-100. I have been looking at the Reef Octopus Classic 150INT Protein Skimmer, but that doesn't look like it will fit in that specific sump. My husband really doesn't want to build the sump since we are brand new to this, and he wants to get one premade.
We purchased the Air Water Ice 100GPD RO/DI unit, and it will be here this week.
The person we got the tank from kept the salinity level low, and our plan is to slowly bring up the level with water changes. We just completed our first water change this evening.
We are also looking at the Current USA Fixture Orbit Marine Pro LED Light, 48-60" light fixture for the tank.
We are more than happy to be patient and take our time getting everything right before adding anymore livestock to the tank. We also would like to buy the right equipment up front, instead of needing something different in 6 months.
Our questions - is the equipment we are looking at getting any good? Does anyone have any recommendations on a sump for us? We are not able to drill the tank, so we are looking at the LifeReef overflow.
Any and all help is VERY appreciated!. Thank you so much in advance.
We need to do some new aquascaping too!
